Job Overview:

A technician assistants primary function at Helping Hands - Richmond VA is to provide the
following services in a thorough and careful manner:

● Focus on recovering patients from anesthesia, entering medical records into the
computer, cleaning and maintaining the hospital, as well as facilitating
communication between the technician, doctors and clients.
● Preparation of patients for anesthesia
● Care and monitoring of patients under anesthesia
● Client service and education, intakes and discharges for patients
● Laundry
● Surgical Instrument cleaning, sterilizing, wrapping and prep
● Being a good representative of “Helping Hands”
● Assistance of the doctors and fellow co workers
● Dental prophylaxis potentially

Requirements:
Experience Requirements: 1 years work experience in a veterinary clinic.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, employee with be exposed to hazards associated
with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled
substances; exposed to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to animal bites, scratches
and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Specific Duties:
Surgical Responsibilities
● Be responsible for all patients, delegating when necessary
● Prepare and present estimates
● Intake patients into hospital
● Have thorough understanding of the intake process, client education, and paperwork
required from the owners prior
● Keep accurate records including anesthetic observations and treatments
● Perform treatments properly and promptly
● Collect blood and urine samples
● Have a complete understanding of laboratory machine maintenance and operation
● The ability to properly identify all surgical instruments in the hospital
● Be able to properly wrap and sterilize all instruments
● Prep patients for surgical procedures
● Ability to maintain and protect a sterile field
● Be able to open instrument packs sterilely.
● Safe and proper handling of therapeutic agents, surgical instruments (SQ, IM, IV
injections and oral/topical medication administration)
● IV fluid/blood product administration, monitoring, and maintenance
● Safe handling/restraint of animals
● Adherence to OSHA standards
● Able to adjust anesthesia and give a patients breath when directed
● Able to set up and maintain an anesthesia machine and to properly perform a leak
check or trouble shoot an anesthetic machine problems
● Knowledge and proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment)
● Have thorough understanding of the process, client education and paperwork
required from the owners during discharge
● Suture/Staple removals once cleared specifically by Dr. John
Dental Responsibilities
● Proper handling, identification and care of dental instruments and radiographic
equipment

Client Service
● Create, present, and explain estimates to clients and collect payment
● Update clients of a patient status
● Communicate clearly with clients and referring veterinarians
● Answer phone with a friendly, cheerful and positive tone
● Keep accurate client communication logs
● Greet clients with a smile and friendly demeanor
● Answer phones with a friendly tone
● Sympathetic understanding of client needs
● Keep an accurate record of client communications
● Be able to enter charges and medical records accurately into computer
● Facilitate any and all communication between doctors and clients requested by
Veterinarian completely and accurately in a timely manner

Hospital Care
● Must understand and ensure proper equipment maintenance
● Maintain a clean workspace
● Help others in maintaining and cleaning the hospital
● Assist in monitoring inventory and keeping supplies stocked
● Laundry
● Adherence to OSHA standards-proper disposal of biohazard and toxic materials
● Take out trash/recycling
● Clean/disinfect cages, runs, treatment area and surgical suite
● Instrument cleaning and care/autoclave use
● Maintain logs (anesthesia, controlled drugs, surgery, deceased animal, radiology)
● Clean thoroughly when slow
● Dishes
● Reduce waste
● Maintain and restock crash cart
● Ensure the hospital is prepared to start surgery as soon as we open the next
morning
