Job Summary

Contribute to community well-being as Assistant Corporate Counsel at Halton Region. Working in a collegial team, provide legal support to the Region’s Social and Community Services department, predominantly supporting the Children’s Services portfolio, including Child Care service system management and the EarlyON Child and Family Centres. 

 

The role would also support the Region’s Long-Term Care Homes, Seniors’ day programs and in-home services, and Employment Services, including the Ontario Works income support program. You will bring strong skills in contract review and drafting, legislative analysis and policy review to this position, where you will also provide general municipal legal advice and support the activities of Regional Council.  You will work as part of a team under the leadership of Senior Legal Counsel.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drafts, reviews and co-ordinates legal documents including contracts, by-laws and transfer payment materials.
  •  Researches, analyzes, and advises on legal implications in matters of law, legal procedure and policy, as well as operational and strategic decisions.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of plans and strategies to preclude or remedy anticipated legal problems arising out of day-to-day operations and projects.
  • Provides legal representation to the Region related primarily to Social and Community Services Department matters.
  • Works cooperatively with a strong team of lawyers and law clerks.
  • Maintains  regular awareness of activities within the Legal Services Division's scope of operations.
  • Prepares outlines and briefs to keep clients and senior management of the Region informed accordingly. Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will possess membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the practice of law, preferably with experience in municipal, public, and/or administrative law
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, as well as strong analytical, research, and client service skills.
  • Broad general legal experience is an asset. 

 

 A combination of education and experience will be considered.
