Position Overview

The Patient Financial Advocate serves as the primary liaison for patients regarding financial matters throughout their care experience at West Cancer Center. This role provides support with insurance billing, coverage verification, financial assistance screening, and patient education regarding financial responsibility. Advocates work closely with patients and internal teams to ensure affordability and accessibility to care while maintaining dignity and confidentiality. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary financial point of contact for patients throughout their care
  • Conduct initial and ongoing evaluations of insurance coverage and benefit verification
  • Review and create estimates; explain out-of-pocket costs to patients
  • Assist with financial assistance and charity application processing
  • Coordinate patient needs with departments such as care support, nurse navigation, and revenue cycle
  • Obtain patient signatures for ABNs or assistance applications when applicable
  • Track and follow up on past due accounts and payment plans
  • Refer patients to external financial resources as needed
  • Utilize community resources to support non-medical patient needs
  • Maintain professional and compassionate communication with patients regarding sensitive topics
  • Meet or exceed productivity and collection benchmarks
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in medical billing, insurance verification, or financial counseling
  • Familiarity with insurance rules (Medicare, commercial payers, referrals, and pre-certifications)
  • Experience with a healthcare information system required

Skills & Abilities

  • High-level interpersonal skills with ability to navigate difficult financial discussions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills to assess insurance benefits and financial options
  • Ability to explain insurance coverage and billing responsibilities clearly to patients
  • Strong understanding of patient assistance programs and pharmaceutical assistance criteria
  • Empathetic, courteous, and detail-oriented approach to patient financial counseling
