Job Summary:  

The Meter Reader is responsible for ensuring accurate water usage readings for commercial and residential properties by performing skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, service, and installation of water meters. This position also provides support to the public, addressing inquiries and assisting with water meter activities to ensure efficient water service across the community.

Minimum Job Requirements: 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. A valid driver’s license. 
  3. One (1) year of experience involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides customer service by answering questions, explaining how to read meters, rereading meters if needed, notifying customers of leaks, and connecting and disconnecting meters through work orders. 
  • Conducts reading and re-reading of meters by operating handheld reading devices, exposing buried meters, reading and recording meter usage accurately, responding to request to repeat readings, testing for leaks, and re-reading meters. 
  • May assist Customer Service Clerks in payment management as needed. 
  • Work is performed in various weather environments and will require walking and vehicle operations to perform meter technician duties.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.

Skills in:

  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:  

The employee must have the ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). This position is outdoors, exposed to weather. Very hot or cold temperatures. Spending time using your hands to handle, control, or feel objects tools or controls. In an enclosed vehicle or equipment. Understanding the importance of being exact or accurate.
