The Lead Inpatient Phlebotomist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
This individual has the documented training appropriate for the pre-analytical phase of patient testing and limited waived laboratory testing. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and transport. Training and competency are documented for limited laboratory testing, proper instrument use, and performance of preventative maintenance and quality control policies under the supervision of the Manager or Certified Medical Technologist. The Laboratory Medical Director authorizes performance of waived analytical procedures. The Lead Inpatient Phlebotomist will additionally monitor and adjust staffing as needed in the absence of Laboratory leadership.
Responsibilities:Assists in the training of new employees under direct control of the Coordinator or Lead.
Performs all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, logging into and answering vocera, answering telephones and logging specimen collections.
Maintains proper communication with nursing staff, physicians, laboratory personnel, coworkers, coordinators and managers.
Collects all specimens by venipuncture or skin puncture upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique.
Assists nursing with collections from vascular access devices. Properly identifies patients according to the Patient Identification procedure at all times.
Inspects all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.
Transports specimens in a timely manner via the most appropriate method to ensure turn-around-time is met; utilizing the pneumatic tube system or physical transportation to the Laboratory.
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing.
Performs ACT testing (moderate complexity testing) authorized by the Medical Director and ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology.
Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies as it pertains to moderate complexity testing.
Documents all activities, including QC, daily temperature checks of equipment, and maintains yearly competency.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
Immediately notifies the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Coordinator or Lead.
Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, CHS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Additional duties as assigned.
Lead Responsibilities:
Rotate on-call schedule as well as providing on-call support for leadership
Work as needed to supplement staffing due to call-ins
Be able to meet the 90 minute arrival expectation when called in
Communicate to leadership any staffing changes for accurate timekeeping records
Adjust staffing as needed based on volume and workflow to maintain set productivity standards
Provide shift support to staff regarding any questions or concerns
Qualifications:EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High School education or equivalent.
Current ASCP or NHA Phlebotomy certification, or within 6 months of hire completion of ASCP certification and continued maintenance.
2-3 years phlebotomy experience
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
College level Biology or Chemistry (preferred).
Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS),
Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrates excellent customer service
Demonstrates a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.
Ability to adapt and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
