Job Summary
Skilled work in the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of heavy construction equipment used in the maintenance and construction of School Board facilities such as parking lots, athletic fields, roads and drainage projects. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment and routine maintenance. May supervise and train subordinate employees. Performs light to heavy physical labor when not operating equipment. Reports to the Utility Lead Worker or other designated supervisor who reviews work for compliance with directives. This class lies above that of Utility Mechanic and below that of Utility Lead Worker.
Essential Functions
1. Transports equipment to and from the work site via tractor/trailer.
2. Operates crane, bulldozer, grader, backhoe, front end loader, gradall and other earth-moving and construction equipment weighing in excess of 26,000 GVWR, in connection with School Board maintenance projects.
3. Lays out and builds ball diamonds, football fields, roads, parking areas and drainage facilities.
4. Patches asphalt parking lots.
5. Digs ditches, cuts down slopes, loads material, grades, breaks pavement, patches and installs pavement.
6. Assists other craftsmen and operates equipment for removing and replacing boilers, setting utility poles and related duties.
7. Performs light maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated.
8. Performs normal labor incidental to the operation to which assigned.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Probation: Six (6) months
Qualifications
Open Requirements: Must have had three (3) years of experience in operating and transporting earth-moving equipment; i.e., crane, bulldozer, grader, backhoe, front end loader, gradall and other earth-moving and construction equipment, weighing in excess of 26,000 GVWR.
Promotional Requirements: All permanent employees of the Duval County School Board who have served for one (1) year in the class of Utility Mechanic may apply.
Licensing: A valid Florida Class A Commercial driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the operational characteristics and use of construction equipment
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations involved in the operation of heavy equipment
- Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations governing the use of heavy equipment
- Strong skills in the operation of front end loader, backhoe, bulldozer and grader
- Basic oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to use transits and building levels to establish grades and elevations
- Ability to lay and repair storm drains
- Ability to make minor repairs and service earth-moving equipment
- Ability to operate heavy equipment
