With a thorough understanding of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits, Veteran and Military Success Services (VMSS) at Santa Fe College (SF) offers a holistic approach to helping veterans and their families pursue their educational goals.

The VMSS Coordinator leads the Veteran and Military Success Services office, performing specialized administrative functions that require technical knowledge and expertise in veterans and military programs and services to support the success of veteran, active duty, and military-affiliated students at SF. The Coordinator is organized, knowledgeable, and committed to student success, leading services, guiding staff, and managing office operations. This role develops and implements orientations and outreach initiatives, monitors policy and legislative changes, evaluates and improves program processes, maintains positive working relationships, manages budgets, and ensures a welcoming, supportive, and positive environment.

Job Description

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Leads, supervises, and mentors staff by overseeing recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation; ensures office compliance with regulations; delegates and monitors assignments and special projects; and fosters professional development to optimize team performance, service quality, and operational accuracy.

  • Provides accurate and professional service to students, staff, faculty, and visitors and serves as a technical information resource to veteran, active duty, and military-affiliated students regarding available programs and services.

  • Supports VMSS students, including assisting with applications and transferring to four-year institutions and helping resolve delinquent benefit payment issues.

  • Coordinates a comprehensive orientation for veteran, active duty, and military-affiliated students each semester, including developing content, providing resources and guidance, and ensuring students are well-informed about policies, benefits, and available support services.

  • Maintains knowledge of the VA enrollment/certification system and Department of Defense educational benefits (Tuition Assistance, MyCAA, EDD), stays informed on available benefit programs, understands audit requirements, and has awareness of population challenges and barriers,  and VA medical considerations to effectively support students.

  • Understands and applies policies, regulations, and operational procedures governing services for VMSS student services and provides clear explanation and interpretation to students, employees, and the community. 

  • Monitors program activities for compliance with regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements, which includes providing information for audits and compliance surveys, as well as liaising with FLVA and USDVA.

  • Evaluates program processes, procedures, and operations and develops and presents recommendations that improve methods and techniques of program administration. 

  • Organizes and coordinates VMSS outreach initiatives, ensuring students are informed on policy changes and are aware of updates to services as necessary.

  • Cultivates and maintains positive, professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote a veteran and military-affiliated friendly campus, while providing guidance and professional development opportunities to support the college community.

  • Serves as a representative and ambassador of VMSS, fostering goodwill and awareness within the broader veteran community, encouraging collaboration, and supporting access to program services.  

  • Monitors developments in veteran-related legislation and policies, providing timely updates and recommendations to supervisor on potential implications and necessary actions.

  • Supports budget development and maintenance for VMSS by overseeing office expenditures and ensuring all transactions comply with budgetary requirements and standards.

  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.

  • Strictly honors the privacy, security, and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Reports to: Director, TRIO and Veteran Programs

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: A bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of experience in Veterans Affairs or related areas or a combination of education and/or experience equal to six (6) years.

Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted.
Preferred: Prior supervisory experience with evidence of strong organizational leadership skills and the ability to adapt is preferred.
