Title: Sr. Accountant/Controller

Department: Accounting

Position Type: Exempt

Supervisory Position: Yes

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Hours: Minimum of forty (40) hours per week, typically Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, plus evenings and weekends as necessary to complete all tasks required.

All employees are expected to operate within the parameters of the William Ryan Homes – Employee Handbook, Corporate Operating Policies, Business Process Model, and individual Employee Performance Plan. Employees are expected to show continuous improvement.


Position Overview

  • This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Accounting, Systems, Help Desk, and Human Resources departments, as well as providing Policy oversight throughout the Divisions.


Job Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for all work of Accounting, Human Resources, Information Systems and Help Desk departments. Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate department staff and follow company performance management process. Provide insight to CEO regarding improving department performance.
  • Develop, implement and maintain financial controls necessary to ensure compliance to company policies. Assist CEO in completing internal corporate audits. Address compliance issues with Department Manager, Division President, and Region President. Escalate to CEO when necessary.
  •  Understand that the highest priority is the reduction of costs (includes the improvement of productivity and the reduction of waste) and the improvement of cycle time. Strike a balance between the effectiveness and efficiency of controls and form a partnership with each operating unit and department to eliminating unnecessary or duplicate tasks and by simplifying or standardizing tasks and processes in an effort to increase productivity and lower overall costs.
  •  Provide timely and accurate operational information. Prepare and distribute financial statements including all monthly and quarterly reports as requested by the fifth day of each month.
  •  Develop measurements and reports that focus and motivate the managers of the company to make decisions that lead to corrective action and improved financial performance.
  •  Ensure the accurate entry of all accounts payable, budget, payroll, revenue, depreciation, and other information necessary to report the operations of the company.
  •  Monitor cash position daily and ensure that both cash amounts and the amounts outstanding under the lines of credit are optimized for the company’s benefit.
  •  Manage all bank account balances to prevent or rectify over drafts.
  •  Secure and maintain appropriate levels of insurance to reduce the organization’s risk (cost v. benefit). File claims and report the status of any outstanding claim monthly.
  •  Assume responsibility for payroll and benefits programs. Keep Division Administrators informed and trained on all matters relating to payroll and benefits.
  •  Provide information systems the support required to ensure that the Company recognizes the optimal benefits of its information systems. Develop a network between all Divisions which utilizes their knowledge and resources to support each other.
  •  Work with and assist Tandem HR with any Human Resource issues that arise.
  •  Oversee the recruiting, hiring, and training of employees.
  •  Improve the business. Collaborate with “Internal Customers” (division management) to eliminate, simplify, standardize, and automate accounts payable and payroll. Collaborate with IS to automate reports when possible; simplify reports that cannot be automated.

Requirements

Required Experience/Education

  • 5 years prior experience within the homebuilding industry as Sr. Accountant/Controller or Assistant Controller.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or Finance with CPA or equivalent.


Other Requirements (e.g., Travel, Physical Demands)

  • Some Travel required. Employee must own or lease a vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license with insurance coverage.
