The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence (SA/DV) Care Centre is a service that is accessed through the Emergency Department 24 hours a day to provide support, medical care and forensic evidence collection to individuals who have experienced a sexual assault or to women who have experienced a recent, physical incident of domestic violence. The service includes a follow-up clinic to provide social work and medical support to anyone who has experienced any type of domestic violence or sexual assault. The team consists of on-call Nurses, Medical Director, Nurse Facilitator, Social Worker and Coordinator.
The SA/DV Nurse is a specially trained Registered Nurse who provides crisis intervention, information on assault/abuse, forensic documentation (which may include photography) and comprehensive care including medical and psychological support to individuals who have recently experienced sexual or domestic violence. The SA/DV Nurse operates from a feminist analysis of violence and has a holistic approach to health care. This position requires commitment to being on call.

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
2. Minimum of 2 years acute care nursing experience
3. Current BCLS Certification
4. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification within the past 2 years or commitment to obtain after 1 year of service with the team.
5. Demonstrated experience and skill in adult venipuncture
6. Demonstrated skill and ability in physical assessment skills including assessment of mental health status
7. Demonstrated ability in providing emotional/psychosocial trauma support and non-judgmental supportive care to survivors of sexual and domestic violence
8. Demonstrated ability to provide crisis counseling
9. Knowledge, sensitivity and experience in dealing with issues of diversity
10. Knowledge of women’s health issues and a feminist understanding of violence and related issues
11. Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills.
12. Demonstrated ability to work independently, as required, and collaboratively, as part of a multidisciplinary team both within the hospital environment and with community partners.
13. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and evidence informed practice.
