McConnell Professor of Practice at the Max Bell School of Public Policy, Dr. Gisèle Yasmeen, is seeking one or two Research Assistant (s) (RA) to support a project on food-systems transformation in global perspective. This work is in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, given the commitments to food-systems and related issues in the 2030 agenda. The RA will assist in three key areas:

 

(1)     propose updates and edits to the background papers Dr. Yasmeen contributed for the preparation of the World Bank study on Asian Urban Food Systems, which was published in March 2021 and available at: https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/entities/publication/0799614f-c0de-5113-bbd3-35d96822b702. The background papers are on the following topics: spatial dimensions of urban food systems; informality and Asian urban food-systems; and gender and urban food-systems. The RA will undertake research to update these papers and discuss with the supervisor as well as relevant faculty, students and others and propose suitable venus for publication in both scholarly and more public policy oriented publications;

(2)     propose updates and edits to a paper Dr. Yasmeen presented at the 5th Conference of the Regulating for Decent Work Networkat the International Labour Office Geneva, Switzerland prior to the pandemic. The paper was entitled Sustainable Livelihoods and Womens Economic Empowerment: adapting to Technological and Demographic Change. Again, these proposed updates and edits will be complemented by discussions with the supervisor and other interested faculty and students and the RA will be asked to make suggestions on suitable venues for publication; and, finally

(3)     providing assistance building partnerships for the Max Bell School for Public Policy under the supervision of Dr. Yasmeen in her areas of expertise and where she already has established networks and relationships. The intention is for this work to lead to research and policy-related funding applications and possible program development.

 

The RA role is ideal for a student with strong research and writing skills who is interested in international affairs, food-systems, urbanization and/or livelihoods in both the Global North and South.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct targeted research on scholarly, policy-oriented and other literature to update the above-mentioned papers;

  • Summarize key findings and draft annotated bibliographies;

  • Organize and maintain research and other project materials systematically;

  • Assist with copyediting and formatting policy papers and proposals; and

  • Perform other research or administrative tasks as needed.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Strong writing and analytical skills in English with fluency in other languages, particularly French, an asset.

  • Background in urbanization, food-systems, livelihoods or a related field.

  • Experience with academic and policy-oriented research methods (e.g., literature reviews, policy analysis).

  • Familiarity with academic databases (e.g., JSTOR, Google Scholar, Web of Science) and using AI tools for effective research without plagiarism.

  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

-Able to work 5 to 15 hours a week

-Ready to start as soon as possible.

-Compensation: $25/hour.
