This position works closely with students and assists the woodworking professor in providing both design and technical instruction during classes and open shop hours; aids students in the development of their projects and promotes safe shop practices. The technician will also assist the sculpture professor with technical instruction and safe classroom practices. The Technician finds creative ways to improve the shop facility in terms of aesthetics, function and safety, and maintains an active, creative, studio practice in view of wood working and sculpture students. Additional duties include management and maintenance of wood shop facilities on a day-to-day basis, as well as sculpture facilities, supervision of interns and student workers, and completion of tasks in the Paul Creative Arts Center.
Duties/Responsibilities
Assist in Woodshop (40%)
Provide both theoretical (artistic) and technical instruction and demonstrations relating to wood working (and/or other fields where appropriate) during classes. Assist students in the development of their projects, and the concept behind the works they are creating both during class, and during open shop hours. Promote safe practices.
Assist in Sculpture Shop (20%)
Provide technical instruction and demonstrations relating to bandsaw use and additional machines within the sculpture shop, during classes. Assist students in the development of their projects.
Equipment Maintenance (20%)
Manage and maintain the woodshop. This includes preventative and reparative maintenance of machines and equipment, maintenance of inventories and budgets, purchase of hardware, lumber, replacement parts, and anything else the shop needs to function, as well as a variety of other tasks. Develop inventive ways to turn the shop into a more artistic and inspiring place. Originate and apply creative solutions to improve the shop in terms of functionality, safety, and aesthetics. Plan and execute larger and more involved projects relating to this duty during school holidays. Part of this time will also include working on maintenance within the sculpture studio.
Supervision of Work Study/Interns (10%)
Supervise 2 work-study students (interview, select and hire new work study students when necessary), delegate shop-related tasks to them as appropriate. Create an “open shop hours” schedule per semester. Supervise one intern who will work within the sculpture shop and wood shop.
Additional Department Responsibilities (5%)
Complete tasks in the Paul Creative Arts Center per faculty request. These tasks include fabrication of custom shelving and furniture, repair of easels and other equipment, and/or more advanced wood working projects. During the summer holidays, the technician may be asked to take on longer projects relating to this duty, as defined by the department chair.
Maintain studio practice (5%)
Maintain an active studio practice (i.e. creation of original, creative works), giving students the opportunity to see advanced, artistic wood working in progress. Work can be furniture or sculpture (or possibly something else depending on the specialization of the technician).
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent and 4 years’ experience, and/or comparable trade school or Bachelor's degree and 1 year experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference for candidates with experience working in a shared shop, working knowledge of mig/tig welding, working in an educational environment, working in an artistic environment, making/thinking/helping students make art.
- MFA in furniture, sculpture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
