About the Department

Hiring New Recruits!  No law enforcement background or certification necessary.

The Front Royal Police Department is seeking to fill a Police Officer vacancy.  Police Officers perform difficult protective service work within the Police Department.  They are responsible for the safety and good order of the community, identifying criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehending offenders and participating in subsequent court proceedings.  Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard.

The department is a full-service department with 12-hour permanent shifts resulting in working an average of 13 days per month.  The Town offers excellent benefits to include automatic enrollment in the Virginia Retirement System (1.85% multiplier) with Hazardous Duty supplement (LEOS); health, vision, dental and wellness benefits; generous paid time off; 14 paid holidays; accident, disability and life insurance; and tuition assistance.  The Town is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

We welcome applicants with no prior experience in law enforcement; starting pay is $24.19/hourly. You are required to pass a written and physical agility test to advance in the hiring process. Upon hire, you will attend the police academy for DCJS certification, followed by one year of field training.

All final applicants are required to pass background, polygraph, psychological, and drug testing prior to hire.

Position Duties

  • On an assigned shift, operate a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
  • Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints.
  • Enforce traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations.
  • Serve warrants and make arrests.
  • Maintain warrant records.
  • Testify in court.
  • Provide police escorts and direct traffic. 
  • Perform residential and commercial checks.
  • Fill out arrest records, fingerprints, and photograph suspects.
  • Perform prisoner security functions.
  • Investigate traffic accidents.
  • Report unsafe conditions existing in street or other public facilities.
  • Interview victims and witnesses.
  • Perform property and evidence duties.
  • Prepare detailed reports on activities and assignments.
  • Participate in a variety of in-service training programs.
  • May be assigned collateral duties such as investigations, radar patrol, DUI patrol, community policing, or training, as qualified.
  • May be assigned special duties such as school program presentations, evidence transport, etc.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

     

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements

  • Education:  High School Diploma/GED 
  • Experience:  One (1) year of responsible work experience
  • Valid Drivers License
Knowledge
  • Fundamental principles of police techniques
  • Federal, state, and local laws
  • Police investigative techniques
  • Geography of the town and location of important buildings
Skills
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Be organized and capable of multi-tasking. 
Abilities
  • Deal with both juveniles and adults.
  • Analyze evidence collected at various scenes.
  • Question suspects with tact and respect.
  • Establish working relationships with other employees.

Work Environment

  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.  
  • The officer may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • This role requires a proactive approach to public service, strong communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates must be prepared for the physical demands of the job and possess a commitment to ethical conduct in all interactions.

Physical Demands

  • Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet police and safety standards, to include: See well enough to drive vehicles under emergency conditions, make valid identifications, use firearms, detect hazardous situations, write legible reports; hear and speak well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person over incident noise, and be alert to situations of danger; bodily mobility to make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods, stamina and endurance necessary in the apprehension of combative suspects, use of hands and fingers to write and type reports, utilize safety gear, and drive vehicles under emergency conditions; ability to distinguish hazardous odors; ability to lift equipment as necessary.
  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
