Individual Placement - Historical Interpretation Participant na Student Conservation Association (SCA)

Position Summary 

This winter, join a dedicated team of National Park Service interpretive rangers working to educate visitors about the Battle of the Big Hole and its lasting impact on the nımí·pu· (Nez Perce) Tribe and American history. In this role, you’ll spend part of your time staffing the visitor center, and part of your time completing an accessibility project. In the project, you will work to enhance our digital content, such as PDFs and word documents, ensuring it is accessible to all individuals, regardless of ability. While no prior experience in accessibility work is required, basic computer skills and a commitment to making information inclusive are essential to your success.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Day-to-day schedules will ebb and flow throughout the season, but the approximate distribution of duties is as follows:

40% - Frontline visitor services. At the visitor center, you will greet and orient visitors, informally interpret the story of the site, and assist with stocking and sales of items in our bookstore.

40% - Digital accessibility project. The initial focus will be on making our digital park brochure accessible to people who use screen readers. As time allows, your work may expand to also making other digital products to be accessible.

20% - Other duties as assigned.

We are seeking someone with excellent time management skills who can effectively complete a large project while working independently. This person should expect to learn more about frontline operations at a small national park site and have an interest in historical and cultural interpretation. You will be trained and mentored throughout the season, with the goal of reaching the same standard expected of seasonal National Park Service employees by the end of your internship.

Our location will allow you to experience Montana’s winter wonderland to the fullest! We are just 20 minutes from Lost Trail Ski Area, and 15 minutes from Chief Joseph Pass which has cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails. We are in a remote corner of the state, and thanks to our cold temperatures, park visitation is very slow in the winter. As a result, you must be comfortable living, working, and socializing with a small group of people.

Marginal Duties 

You will also write social media posts, shovel snow regularly, and rove trails as weather allows. Occasional assistance with simple janitorial duties may be required. There may be limited opportunities to assist with field trips, depending on the booking schedule

Required Qualifications 

Customer service experience: the ability to conduct research and write at a college level. Due to the remote location, a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle are required. The selectee will be required to pass a National Park Service background check.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications 

Money handling experience; public speaking experience; knowledge of social media platforms; desire to pursue a career with the National Park Service or other public land agency.

Living Accommodations 

Housing is provided on-site approximately 1/3 mile from the visitor center. It includes a private bedroom with a queen size bed in a house shared with one or two other seasonal staff of mixed genders. All units come fully furnished, however the intern must provide their own bedding and toiletries. Home internet is not provided by the park, but the intern may pay to have it installed.

Compensation  

$535 weekly living allowance

$1,100 one-time round trip travel allowance

Free housing on-site

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
