Hastings Deering is on the hunt for a Structural Specialist to join our team in Mackay or Rockhampton reporting to our Maintenance and Engineering Manager- Dragline & Electric Rope Shovels. This is a Permanent, Monday to Friday role.
The key focus of this position is to provide support and direction to both internal and site-based teams through technical structural services for Draglines and Electric Rope Shovels.
What you’ll be doing:
- Collaborate across all levels – work closely with stakeholders and provide clear status reports to keep everyone informed and aligned.
- Deliver technical expertise – diagnose and repair advanced structural failures, modifications, or upgrades, ensuring all work meets Caterpillar specifications.
- Maintain compliance and accuracy – carry out structural audit inspections in line with OEM standards, making accurate, risk-based decisions and prioritising effectively.
- Support major shutdowns – provide supervision and technical guidance during customer outages and shutdowns to ensure safe and efficient delivery.
- Plan and coordinate major repairs – assist in developing scopes of work, reviewing plans, and coordinating structural component repairs and overhauls.
- Drive improvement initiatives – work alongside customer maintenance, reliability, and improvement teams on projects that boost equipment performance and lifespan.
- Provide cost and upgrade support – review repair and upgrade costs while supplying OEM insights to support customer decision-making.
- Complex problem solving – troubleshoot and develop repair methods for challenging structural issues, ensuring long-term, reliable solutions.

What you’ll need:
A successful teammate will have:
Mining maintenance expertise – demonstrated experience working on Draglines and Electric Rope Shovels.
Qualified tradesperson – trade-qualified Boilermaker/Boomwelder, with tertiary qualifications in Structural Engineering considered highly desirable.
Welding inspection skills – IWI-S International Welding Inspector (Standard) qualification would be highly regarded.
Technical knowledge – strong understanding of material specifications and the ability to tailor repair solutions to meet designated requirements.
Strategic capability – proven experience developing strategies, budgets, and work scopes for structural repairs and upgrades.
Supervision and quality control – experience overseeing repairs, managing third-party contractors, and ensuring work is completed to the highest standard.
Team-focused approach – positive attitude with a commitment to developing the business through collaboration and teamwork.
Strong communication skills – well-developed customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
