The University of Illinois Foundation (Foundation) is the official fundraising and private gift-receiving organization of the University of Illinois (University). It works closely with alumni and friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations, as well as campus development professionals to create fundraising programs and opportunities that benefit the University.
The Manager, Data Quality & Metadata will implement processes for active Metadata management; and build and support the Data Quality competency for maintaining accuracy, integrity, and usability of institutional data. This role involves engaging with cross-functional stakeholders to establish and uphold data quality and metadata management standards, processes, and best practices. The Manager will coordinate resources to implement and maintain enterprise data governance tools to ensure robust data cataloging, lineage, and stewardship practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish and enforce data quality standards, policies and procedures across the organization, ensuring data used for decision-making is accurate, consistent, and trustworthy.
- Manages a team of professionals, setting strategic priorities, directing, and prioritizing the team’s work. Delegates and reviews team members’ work to ensure it meets scope, requirements, and deadlines. Hires, trains, develops, and recognizes team members’ performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve data quality issues through root cause analysis, ensuring proper ownership, accountability, corrective actions and continuous improvement in data management processes.
- Lead metadata management efforts by developing and maintaining data dictionaries, business glossaries, and classification schemas to improve data transparency and usability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote data governance best practices; Identifies data governance initiatives; reports progress in a timely manner to committees and stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with data governance regulations and standards; identify and mitigate data-related risks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in information management, Computer Science, Business Analytics, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in data governance, data quality, or metadata management in a cloud platform, preferably Azure.
- 3+ years leading technical teams, both internal and external in a hybrid environment.
- Proven experience with enterprise data governance tools (Microsoft Purview preferred).
- Strong understanding of data quality principles, metadata standards, and data lineage concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to work with both business and technical stakeholders to promote data stewardship and literacy.
- Working with CRM systems and ability to write SQL code.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and project management skills.
PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in a higher education or non-profit environment.
- Familiarity with data privacy and regulatory compliance frameworks (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, GDPR).
- Knowledge of modern data architecture (data lakes, warehouses, APIs, etc.).
- Certifications in data management or related fields (e.g., CDMP, DGSP) is desirable.

The starting salary range for this position is projected to be $109,000 - $126,000 per year. While our job postings include salary ranges, your compensation will be based on your specific experience and qualifications—we're not limited by these posted ranges.
