Position Overview |
The Patient Account Representative for Insurance Authorizations provides customer service to patients by verifying Insurance coverage. The representative also performs various clerical and customer-related duties to clinic operations by maintaining the flow of clinic patients through checking in and obtaining insurance authorizations for services.
Essential Functions |
- Verifies insurance coverage and benefits for a high volume of patients by using all available verification and eligibility tools and calling payers when necessary. Enters all information gathered into the registration system.
- Obtains verification, referral or authorization for patient prior to providing services.
- Obtains patient information to facilitate the clinical verification of unique patient identifiers, the billing and collections process, and compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements.
- After benefits have been determined, estimates self-pay portions (deductibles, co-pays, non-covered services).
- Documents and follows up on team and clinic awareness efforts.
- Obtains current demographic information from patients and families.
- Maintains regular communication and follow-up with team leaders, patient accounting, and other departments.
- Informs all relevant parties about pending referrals, authorizations, unexpected delays, and other potential issues.
- Captures and enters patients’ demographic, financial, and clinical information into various information systems, including pre-registration or scanning information systems, in an accurate, complete, and timely manner.
- Provides backup for check-in and check-out as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications |
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One year of direct experience as a medical office receptionist in a fast-paced clinic, hospital, or similar healthcare setting preferred. Knowledge and experience with health insurance and vision plans preferred.

- Ability to deal with others with courtesy and tact using good verbal communication skills and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to file accurately and maintain accurate medical records.
- Ability to enter data accurately.
- Knowledge of electronic health care records systems.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately for daily tasks.
- Ability to read, write, comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of workflow.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work independently.
