Position Statement:  Direct Support Professionals’ responsibilities include supervising and teaching learners as assigned at work, volunteer sites, the community, and in our center, collecting and graphing data to ensure progress is being made, managing problem behavior, and contributing to the overall development of instructional and treatment programs.

Qualifications/Certificates:

High School Diploma            

Experience working with learners with disabilities (preferred)     

Experience working with adults with disabilities (preferred)

Experience working with learners with autism (preferred)

Valid NJ driver’s license

40-hour week

Reports to: Clinical Supervisors and Director of Adult & Transition Services

Job Requirements/Skills/Knowledge:

Be of good moral character

Ability to successfully complete the Alpine Learning Group Autism Services, Inc. training program

Good communication skills

Facility with educational technology (e.g., tablets, computers)

Ability to work with diverse individuals and needs

Maintain confidentiality    

Punctual daily attendance 

Clearances:               

Compliance with Federal, State and DDD requirements, including, but not limited to, Criminal History, Motor Vehicle Review, Citizenship Status and Central Registry Review, drug testing for controlled, dangerous substances as a condition of employment, as well as possible random testing while employed based on a randomization process provided by DHS and the DHS vendor. The law requires that any Adult Program Instructor who refuses a random test shall be terminated from employment.

Working Environment/Physical Demands:  

Sitting, walking, standing, occasional running, some lifting, good fine and gross motor coordination when guiding learners, ability to supervise routines, vision and hearing and receptive and expressive language abilities as suited to instructional and behavioral needs of one’s learners. The Direct Support Professional must have the strength and agility to assist with movement of learners during crisis intervention.

Responsibilities: 

Services will be provided either on-site, in-home or through distance learning, or any combination therefore, as determined by the administration. 

  1. Implements instructional programs, including providing job coaching at Supported Employment/Volunteer sites. Teaches procedures including, but not limited to, the following:
    1. Discrete trial learning
    2. Chaining
    3. Prompting (e.g., modeling, manual guidance, verbal)
    4. Incidental teaching
    5. Systematic desensitization.
  2. Implement behavior reduction treatment program.
  3. Collects, summarizes, and reports data.
  4. Supervises assigned learners throughout the day.
  5. Contributes to development of instructional and treatment programs.
  6. Reports emergencies and injuries as per ALG policies and procedures.
  7. Attends staff meetings and in-service training sessions (including crisis intervention).
  8. Recommends materials, equipment, and supplies.
  9. Carries out other duties as may be requested by the Clinical Supervisors, Director of Adult & Transition Services, or the Executive Director.
