The Role: | |||
The Traffic Signal Technician Performs semi-skilled work of routine to moderate difficulty in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment, primarily in field locations. The ideal candidate for the role will have a college course in electricity or construction, and one year of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals or similar electrical equipment. | |||

Position Duties
- Assists in construction and maintenance of signalized intersections including installation of underground conduit, pull boxes, traffic signal cabinets, intelligent transportation system (ITS) equipment, concrete foundations, signal poles, mast arms, Luminaires, signal heads and terminal boxes.
- May learn to assist ITS Technicians in operating, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, replacing and repairing malfunctioning fiber optic, wireless communication system devices, closed circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs, electronic and computer equipment.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance at signalized intersections to include inspecting, repairing, replacing and testing signal control equipment and field equipment to ensure proper operation, condition, and alignment of equipment.
- Assists in performing modifications and operational tests in the shop on traffic signal cabinets received for stock or field installation; completes and files completed test forms.
- Locates and marks underground traffic signal and fiber communication lines and equipment citywide at signalized intersections for blue stake requests.
- Repairs or replaces equipment in the field on an emergency basis due to storm or accident damage, faulty equipment, burned out lamps or other electrical or equipment problems.
- Assists in modernizing or revamps existing intersections by installing new equipment while traffic signals are still in operation.
- Operates construction and maintenance equipment such as platform trucks, bucket trucks, concrete saws, underground piercing drills and electrical test meters.
- Installs overhead signs, banners and lights for other departments.
- Places barricading and traffic control devices to provide for a safe work environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
College courses in electricity or construction, and one year of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals or similar electrical equipment.
Knowledge of:
The tools, equipment and general practices of construction
The hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in working with electricity and in working in and along the roadways
The methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment
Operate various types of construction and maintenance equipment
Ability to:
Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from plans and drawings
Perform preventive maintenance program procedures
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees and the general public
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
Special Requirements
IMSA Level I certification and Work Zone Safety Certification within one (1) year of hire.
Will be required to work after hours on call, traffic signal duty; may be required to work scheduled extended hours during large, spectator events.
Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.

Other Qualifications
Requires frequent heavy lifting of up to 75 pounds, pulling heavy cable, cable-working from heights, working near high voltage and working in traffic areas.
