About the Department
The City of Lansing is seeking a Residential Appraiser Apprentice to join a team of professionals within the Assessors Office. This is a great opportunity for those who are excited to begin their career within the assessing field and have the ability to gain a wealth of knowledge, experience, and potentially earn certifications to advance within the department! This position will learn about various software programs, how to conduct field inspections, assess maps, including GIS maps, understand the General Property Tax Act and associated legal updates, and more. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
- Must possess a Michigan Certified Assessing Technician Certificate (MCAT)
- Upon hire, this position offers the opportunity to pursue and obtain a Michigan Certified Assessing Officer (Level 2) Certification (MCAO).
- High School Diploma or GED with six (6) months of training beyond High School; AND
- At least one (1) year of experience in the assessing profession.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License
- Reviews residential sales, both from the desktop and field inspection, to verify whether it should be used in our sales study.
- Reviews sales to determine the correct taxable value due to uncapping.
- Reviews building permits physically “in the field” to add the value to the assessment and taxable value.
- Responds to taxpayer inquiries.
- Communicates assessment information to the public in person and on the phone.
- Assist with taxpayer appeals.
- Training will be provided, including but not limited to the following areas, BS&A and Apex software, field inspections (measuring, photo documentation, blueprints), identifying building components, etc.
