The Collections Specialist is responsible for performing collection activities associated with delinquent member accounts while ensuring RVCU’s professional image and member-focused mission are upheld. This role reviews delinquent accounts, determines appropriate actions, and works with legal counsel or collection agencies in proceedings such as foreclosures, repossessions, and bankruptcies. By balancing empathy with accountability, the Collections Specialist protects the credit union’s financial health while supporting members in finding solutions to repay obligations.

Essential Job Functions
Reviewing, Collecting, and Follow Up
- Manages collection queues across multiple stages of delinquency, utilizing a variety of communication strategies to engage with members to determine repayment plans in accordance with RVCU policies.
- Uses skip tracing and collection strategies to locate members, negotiates payment terms, counsels members on financial options, and ensures consistent follow-up on commitments.
- Manages accounts in bankruptcy, foreclosure, or repossession status while processing member requests such as hardship or skip payment.
Collaboration
- Works closely with the attorneys and third-party vendors to resolve accounts, counsel on negotiation tactics, and recommend actions such as repossession or charge-off.
- Partners with internal departments to resolve issues related to titles, payoffs, and documentation.
Legal Action and Charge Offs
- Monitors and facilitates activities for seriously delinquent accounts, including repossessions, legal proceedings, charge-offs, and recoveries.
- Coordinates with attorneys, repo companies, and auction houses to complete processes and follow up on deficiencies.
Documentation on Reporting
- Adheres to all collection-related policies, procedures, and regulations, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
- Prepares delinquency and charge-off reports, manages ChexSystems updates, and responds to credit bureau disputes.
Processes, Policies, and Procedures
- Maintains accurate and current records of repayment agreements, conversations, and member financial status.
- Makes recommendations for process improvements that enhance the member and employee experience.
Requirements
- This is a full-time position in Machesney Park with partial remote flexibility after a training period.
- 1-3 years of related experience, preferably in a financial institution
- The ability to speak bilingually is preferred, but not required.
- Comply with State and Federal Laws governing the collection industry
- Depending on your skills and experience, you could make between $23-$27 per hour
