About the Department

Responsible for the installation and maintenance of personal computers and network systems. Installs personal computer systems and applications to include all operating systems, spreadsheets, word processors, networks, IBM Client Access, and other clients/server applications. Assists in maintaining network performance and security with hardware and software upgrades. Ensures that all personal computers on the network operate at the most current level of software through upgrades and patches.


Position Duties

  1. Maintains LAN and WAN to ensure availability to users by minimizing service interruptions and balancing network activity.
  2. Installs personal computer systems and applications to include all operating systems, spreadsheets, word Processors, networks, IBM Client Access, and other client/server applications.
  3. Performs maintenance of all personal computer systems.
  4. Provides support for computer hardware and software.
  5. Administers the telecommunications systems throughout the City to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of numerous citywide hardware and software components.
  6. Ensures the daily operations of telecommunication equipment used Citywide and makes periodic prescribed changes such as time changes, additions, moves of users and departments, etc.
  7. Maintain and configure web access software to provide authorized users access to the internet and to restrict unauthorized users from internet access.
  8. Ensures that all software installed on the City's systems is properly licensed.
  9. Provides remote access to LAN by managing the hardware and software that provides remote access.
  10. Ensures LAN and system performance, reliability, and security by coordinating system upgrades for all servers on the network.
  11. Ensures that all personal computers operate at the best performance and reliability by providing system upgrades and patches with minimal interruptions to daily business activities.
  12. Evaluate and make recommendations for the purchase of equipment for the network, communications, security, personal computers, and telephone equipment.
  13. Performs network setup and support as well as designs, specifies, and documents LAN configurations according to users' needs, utilizing outside support resources as appropriate. Also prepares charts and diagrams to explain network operations.
  14. Works with confidential data, which, if disclosed, may result in internal and external problems and would be detrimental to the City.
  15. Performs additional related responsibilities and duties as required by the Manager of Information Systems
Miscellaneous Duties:
  1. Operates motor vehicle as necessary.
  2. Performs additional tasks as required by the Information Systems Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A current and valid driver's license.
  2. A bachelor's degree is preferred with a minimum of 18 months of experience in a related field.
  3. Must have experience and knowledge of personal computers, software applications, hardware devices, the Internet, Email, and networking theories and practices.


Other Qualifications

  1. Must be able to set up and maintain network printers as well as remote printers currently installed systems.
  2. Must thoroughly know how to set up and install barcode scanners and thermal receipt printers.
  3. Must be able to install and maintain category 5 and category 6 Ethernet and fiber, and must possess a working knowledge of a T1 and ASE Switched Ethernet interface.
  4. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the installation of personal computer systems, including hardware and software.
  5. Must be able to install or change personal computer components.
  6. Must be able to perform personal computer maintenance functions.
  7. Must be able to install computer operating systems and application software.
  8. Must be able to analyze computer applications to determine maintenance and/or modification requirements.
  9. Must be able to isolate problems and determine the required program changes.
  10. Must possess a working knowledge of and be able to install equipment and make changes to the City's computer systems.
  11. Must be able to solve problems that are often difficult to discover.
  12. Must possess a thorough understanding of the telecommunications systems.
  13. Must possess strong and refined interpersonal communication skills
  14. Must have a strong sense of initiative and integrity.
  15. Must be able and willing to work nights and weekends as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS *WITH OR WITHOUT ACCOMMODATIONS:
  1. As necessary to carry out essential duties and responsibilities requiring lifting and /or handling boxes weighing up to 100 pounds, computer, related equipment, and related supplies.
  2. Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and climb ladders.
  3. Ability to work overhead for periods of time.
  4. Ability to work in various temperatures.
