About the Department

DESCRIPTION
YOUTH AND FAMILY COUNSELOR
WAGE GROUP:  HH

Under the general direction of the Director of Human Services this position involves conducting clinical assessments, developing treatment plans, offering crisis support, providing advocacy, and working collaboratively with schools, healthcare providers, and other community partners. Incumbent will support clients across the lifespan — including children, adolescents, adults, and families — addressing a variety of emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges.

Position Duties

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

  1. Clinical Services:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop personalized treatment plans.
    • Provide individual, family, and group therapy for a diverse population.
    • Offer crisis intervention and refer clients to appropriate community resources.
  2. Collaboration & Advocacy:
    • Partner with schools, courts, healthcare providers, and community agencies to advocate for clients.
    • Work with external stakeholders to ensure coordinated care and services.
  3. Case Management:
    • Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.
    • Maintain timely and confidential client records per agency and state standards.
    • Ensure adherence to billing and productivity standards.
  4. Community Engagement:
    • Participate in and/or develop community education and prevention initiatives.
    • Represent the agency in community meetings, partnerships, and program coordination activities.
  5. Clinical Supervision & Professional Development:
    • Supervise graduate student interns when appropriate.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development, including training and supervision.
    • Actively participate in staff meetings to provide input towards program development and staff training
  6. Emergency Support:
    • Respond to client emergencies and participate in the on-call rotation as needed.
       7. Hybrid Schedule: Hybrid Schedule: Counselors schedule will include 2-3 weekday evenings (Monday-Friday), with evening hours schedule based on department needs and seniority.
       8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Works under the direction of the Director of Human Services.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
 

  • Masters degree in Marriage & Family Therapy, Counseling, Social Work or other license-eligible mental health clinical field.
  • Licensure of one of the following is required.
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
    • Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PhD or PsyD, licensed in CT)
  • Valid CT driver’s license

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
 
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical setting, providing mental health services to youth, adults, and families.
  • Experience in individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Strong assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning skills.
  • Crisis intervention experience and ability to collaborate effectively with external partners.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse client needs.
  • Proficient in maintaining client records and adhering to documentation standards.
  • Ability to meet caseload and service delivery expectations.

Each candidate must have the required experience and training to be eligible for this position which includes: a Masters degree in  Marriage & Family Therapy, Counseling, Social Work or other license-eligible mental health clinical field, and hold a currently valid Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Counselor (LPC), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) license, or be a Clinical Psychologist (PhD or PsyD, licensed in CT). .
