- Patient intake: Prepare patients for exams by taking their medical histories and vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate.
- Procedure assistance: Assist the podiatrist with minor in-office procedures, including toenail removal, wart treatment, and wound care.
- Wound care and dressings: Clean and dress foot-related wounds and provide patient education on at-home care.
- Casting and bracing: Help apply casts and splints and assist with fitting orthotics, braces, and other supportive devices.
- Imaging and lab work: Assist with diagnostic tests, such as taking and developing X-rays of the foot and ankle or collecting blood and urine samples.
- Instrument sterilization: Sterilize and maintain the cleanliness of surgical instruments and examination rooms.
- Patient education: Instruct patients on proper foot care, footwear, and post-treatment instructions, especially those with conditions like diabetes.
- Scheduling: Schedule, confirm, and reschedule patient appointments.
- Record-keeping: Manage and update electronic and paper patient medical records.
- Billing and claims: Handle billing, process patient payments, and submit claims to insurance companies.
- Supply management: Monitor and order medical and office supplies to ensure the clinic is well-stocked.
- Correspondence: Answer phones, manage correspondence, and act as a liaison between patients and the podiatrist.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Most employers prefer candidates who have completed an accredited medical assistant program, which can result in a certificate, diploma, or associate's degree.
- Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare or medical office setting is often preferred.
- Certifications: While not always required by law, professional certification (such as Certified Medical Assistant or Podiatric Medical Assistant, Certified) can improve job prospects. A CPR certification is also commonly required.
- Compassion and empathy: Patients often experience pain or discomfort, so a compassionate demeanor is crucial.
