About the Department

The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader – CDL  to lead team members while performing general park maintenance involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will lead staff and perform a variety of maintenance tasks, such as event support setup and breakdown, trades work, building maintenance, and general grounds maintenance. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate who demonstrates taking initiative, as well as planning and organizing work of self and others to meet the operation's goals. The selected candidate will be part of a team coordinating event and festival support and working with facility managers and event coordinators. The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, loaders, forklifts, and other such equipment.

This position is currently scheduled to report to the Watkins Maintenance Yard. The schedule will be Monday through Friday, 6:00 am – 2:45. NOTE: Reporting location and schedule are subject to change, reflecting the programmatic need at the time of hire (to include weekends).

Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for this position is $47,395 $65,667. Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Position Duties

  • Provide leadership and coordination of waste management team and work assignments. 
  • Ensure waste collection routes are executed efficiently and safely, in full compliance with applicable waste disposal and recycling regulations.
  • Utilize a Commercial Driver’s License to perform park maintenance tasks. 
  • Ensure staff is utilizing proper safety equipment. 
  • Inspect finished work assignments to ensure they are of high quality. 
  • Train direct staff in the proper method and safety involving assigned tasks. 
  • Transports and hauls equipment to various work locations. 
  • Operate various types of equipment, from handheld to light equipment. 
  • Ensure that all supplies, chemicals, and equipment are used and stored correctly. 
  • Maintain and ensure inventory is accurate to maintain equipment, parks, and facilities within our division. 
  • Provide input on reporting of assignments of staff to the direct supervisor. 
  • Obtain quotes, estimates, and order materials to complete tasks properly. 
  • Complete work orders and submit them to Park Manager daily. 
  • Utilize EAM (work order tracking system) to book labor and provide necessary details. 
  • Participates in employee selections, performance evaluations, and counseling. Recommends disciplinary actions. 
  • Prepares and reports on-the-job injuries. 
  • Snow removal and other weather-related duties. 
  • Lead and monitor Park/Facilities Maintenance Workers with daily duties for waste management, general park maintenance, program support, playgrounds, snow removal, ballfield, and trail maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.   
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
  6. Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
    1. Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; 
    2. Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
    3. National Playground Safety Institute certification.

Other Qualifications

Class/Specification: Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader - CDL

Primarily works outside. May work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.) Ability to lift to 100 pounds is desirable.

May be subject to drug and alcohol testing.  

Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements is required within 12 months of employment.
