We have an opportunity for a Software Developer to join an established software development team in the Tree of Life programme on a 2 year contract. As a team we develop robust software platforms in Python and Javascript (React) to enable our science to thrive.

You will be responsible for:
Developing and maintaining our core software platforms which include a sample tracking system, currently in use by three programmes, a reporting and analytics portal and various public-facing websites along with back-end infrastructure.

About Us:
We are a small team focussed on developing high quality software, both to help our scientists and operations teams to perform their roles efficiently and to share our programme's results with collaborators and the public. We collaborate cross-programme within the institute.

About You:

You will be a team player with experience of coding, testing, documenting and refactoring complex software systems. You will be keen to work in Scrum, and be confident to interact with stakeholders, product owners, and other developers to deliver quality software. As a good communicator you'll be keen to share the team's work with the wider community.

Essential Technical Skills:

  • A Degree in Computer Science, IT or equivalent working experience

  • Proven understanding of software lifecycle delivery and development methods

  • Proven experience of using JavaScript and Python

  • Knowledge and experience with modern software development practices, including version control, continuous integration, and workflow management tools such as GitLab etc.

Essential Competencies and Behaviours:

  • Ability to work within a goal orientated team environment

  • Ability to work with stakeholders external to the development team

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to prioritise, manage own workload, and deliver agreed activities consistently on time

  • Ability to understand issues within a code base and take guidance from Senior Developers to assist in the resolution

  • Desire to learn and progress in the field of Software Engineering


Other Information:

Currently our team works both on-site and remotely. On-site days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
