The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control,and rehabilitation of inmates. The Detective (Investigative Services Division) is located at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and reports to the leadership of the Investigative Services Division. The incumbent will perform a variety of comprehensive investigative functions and duties, including reporting, inmate investigations, tracking, interviewing, classifying, and processing complaints regarding misconduct allegations against employees, volunteers, or contractors employed by OPSO. Moreover, the Detective position requires tenacity, hard work, trustworthiness, and dedication to public service.

 

SALARY

 

The salary for a selected applicant will be aligned accordingly and commensurate with the applicant's knowledge, skills, experience, certifications, and education requirements of the subject position.  This position is non-exempt.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Abide by Federal law, including the United States Constitution, State Law, and OPSO policy and procedures.
  • Assist with investigations of all OPSO complaints, criminal matters, misconduct, or claims of damages by an OPSO deputy or employees, including inmates.
  • Maintain sufficient documentation and keep track of the investigation of a complaint from a citizen (third party or anonymous), employee, or observed behavior of an employee involved in an alleged violation.
  • Prepare written reprimand, suspension, dismissal for violation of established policy or procedures, law, legislation, order, or rule.
  • Compile detailed investigative reports and organized records.
  • Testify in court regarding case evidence and findings to secure a conviction.• Use deductive reasoning and analysis to make informed decisions and conclusions that may lead to prosecution.
  • Collect and analyze evidence, interview witnesses, and make arrests.
  • Enforce decisions of the disciplinary review board and/or Sheriff concerning deputy or staff discipline suspensions
  • Acts as investigator for any sexual harassment complaints.
  • Reach a logical conclusion and prepare a recommendation.
  • Coordinate search and arrest warrants and arrest suspects as needed.
  • Acts as termination officer for the department.
  • Identify critical issues and report findings to the proper authority.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements, Skills, and Ability to:

  • A High School Diploma/GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement. (Basic P.O.S.T. Certification required)
  • Proficient in report writing.
  • Strong analytical skills and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to take on challenging responsibilities.
  • Good moral character.
  • Possess keen social awareness.
  • High levels of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
