The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Veterinariangrade G31 position, in the Animal Services division.


About the Position

This is management—level, professional and administrative work involving the medical care and medical policies and procedures of Animal Control and the operation of the Animal Control Facility. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the Associate Director, Animal Management Division, in the overall administration of the Division by exercising their medical expertise across all areas of the operation. They may supervise and direct staff of in the care, health, and well-being of the animals in our care and within Prince George’s County. This is an opportunity for a leader to work with the Associate Director to build a health program for the animals and people of Prince George’s County that has significant and lasting impact. This position is designated “essential” in accordance with DOE Instruction 110.4.

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).   

Position Duties

  • Provides oversight and guidance of all medical care within the Animal Services Division, inside and outside the facility, and the county.

  • Provides the Associate Director assistance preparing a long-term plan for the development of the medical operations of Animal Services Division.

  • Prepares and reviews detailed reports, letters, and memorandums relating to Divisional programs and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited College or University.
  • Must be licensed by the State of Maryland to practice veterinary medicine at the time of application and license must be maintained during employment.
  • Two (2) years of professional veterinarian experience, including one (1) year of work in a public shelter or high volume spay/neuter clinic.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of shelter medicine experience.

  • 3 years of spay and neuter experience.

  • 3 years of experience working in a government organization.

  • Previous experience or involvement in public policy.
