Hourly Rate: $21.20

Classification: Temporary

Non-Exempt – Overtime Eligible

 

General Summary: 

Under general supervision, a Lifeguard I is responsible for overseeing aquatic activities and the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards may Instruct or assist with swimming lessons at a community swimming pool. Perform pool maintenance tasks and attend in-service training.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee activities at a community swimming pool according to assignment
  • Supervise the pool and decks of the swimming facility
  • Ensure adherence to water safety rules and practices
  • Enforce health and safety regulations at the pool facilities
  • Instruct and assist classes in fundamentals of swimming
  • Generate positive communication with internal and external customers
  • Respond to participants in danger by performing rescues and administering first aid
  • Perform pool maintenance tasks to ensure compliance with health and safety standards
  • Maintain, repair and take inventory of first aid and life-saving equipment
  • Possess the skills to administer first aid to victims of accident, injury or sudden illness
  • Ability to establish compliance with or enforce pool ordinances and rules
  • Participate in all in-service meetings and training

  The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive.  An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor.  This position is considered non-exempt.

Education and Experience:

  Required Red Cross Certifications: Must possess all current (unexpired) certifications

  • Deep Water Lifeguard r.24
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • CPR/AED and First Aid
  • Emergency Medical Response (EMR preferred)
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI preferred) is required to qualify as a Lifeguard II.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (preferred)
  • Swim in deep water (500 yd. swim, 2-minute water tread, and timed brick retrieval test)
  • Swim assessment required prior to hire

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ascend/Descend stairs/ladders/balance (frequent).
  • Position self to bend or twist (frequent).
  • To move, transport, position items up to 50 lbs. (frequent).
  • Exposed to outdoor weather conditions (moderate).
  • Operate Equipment (moderate).
  • Stationary or squatting position (frequent).
  • Swim in shallow and deep water for more than 15 minutes
