Taste NY Market Store Shift Leader responsibilities include opening and/or closing of the Market, assigning responsibilities to Market Store Associates and serving as the “go to” person for staff and customers when a manager is not present, assisting with management of inventory, operation of cash register, cash controls, transportation of inventory to the store, customer service, food service and record keeping. Helps to keep the store visually distinctive and impeccably maintained – cleaning, preparing product demonstrations, restocking, refilling supplies, etc. Associates also discuss NYS agriculture and local foods with customers to engage them in these areas and to provide information upon request about the food and farm products sold in the store.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree. High School Diploma plus one-year related experience may substitute for an Associates degree.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Ability to effectively work in an informal, educational-based retail environment, ensuring positive public educational and customer service experiences. 

  • Ability to help maintain a welcoming environment for all.

  • Ability to manage opening and/or closing responsibilities, including staff oversight when managers are not present.

  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, customers and others

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to constantly work flexible hours related to the Market schedule, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in customer service and retail environments.

  • Knowledge of the organization, operation, philosophy and objectives of Cooperative Extension.

  • Knowledge of agriculture and agricultural practices.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction and Management – 10%

  • Opens and/or closes the Market. Responsible for the possession of a master key and in charge of opening the door for other employees.

  • Responsible for opening the safe, counting and replenishing cash in the drawers and opening the register. 

  • Delegates tasks for Taste NY Market Store Associates ensuring the task list provided by the manager is complete.

  • Serve as the “go-to” person when the manager or assistant manager are not on site. 

  • Responsible for final close out of the cash drawers.

  • Assist with solving problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the Taste NY Marketplace Program utilizing appropriate, existing policies and procedures.

Coordination and Operation – 85%

  • Provides customer service – greets, assists and serves the needs of Taste NY store customers. Describe the local farms, produce, food and products displayed.

  • Prepares and serves fresh made breakfast and lunch items, including soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and hot and cold beverages.

  • Cleans and prepares food prep areas.

  • Operates point of sale cash register, makes change, etc. Cash Controls – follow all procedures for proper management and handling of cash.

  • Stock and replenish store supplies and inventory. Track product inventory.

  • Prepares product and food demonstrations.

  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining a visually distinctive and impeccably maintained store.

  • Assist with store opening and closing procedures.

  • Quickly notifies supervisors of any unique or emergency situations.

  • Assist with store inspection, organization and recordkeeping.

  • Receive and log scheduled deliveries.

  • Assist with promotion of agri-tourism in Columbia & Greene Counties.

  • Maintain equipment, troubleshoot if necessary and call for repair as directed.

  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
