Organization Overview

The Energy & Utilities Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Facilities & Operations Directorate operates and maintains the Lab's electric transmission & distribution systems, site fire detection systems, central steam facility, central chilled water facility, potable water treatment facility, waste treatment facility, site energy management control systems, energy metering systems, and is responsible for the purchase of all bulk liquid fuels, natural gas and electricity.

Position Description

The Energy & Utilities Division seeks an Electrician to join their team. Under minimum supervision, lays out, constructs, installs, maintains, repairs and operates (in accordance with the national electrical codes, or as otherwise directed) electrical systems, equipment, controls and related devices.  May be required to perform similar duties on other than maintenance division equipment and facilities.

This position reports to the Electrical Supervisor. The hours of operation/shift for this position are Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair various types of indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, 120V to 277V in commercial buildings
  • Test & troubleshoot electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, switchgear, equipment, fixtures, and devices using various types of test equipment.
  • Install conduit, junction boxes, raceways, and all other mechanical hardware.
  • Utilize hand and mechanical pipe pending tools
  • Install and troubleshoot fire alarm panels, devices, and security systems.
  • Install and maintain motors, motor starters, circuit breakers, panel boards, switchboards, and other electrical equipment in a commercial setting.
  • Maintain and repair UPS systems and generators
  • Respond to emergency situations, alarms, or occurrences in an appropriate manner.
  • Inspect electrical systems and equipment to identify hazards, defects, and the need for repair, and to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code.
  • Operate and maintain switchgear and controls; may repair and maintain motor control centers, programmable logic controls, and variable frequency drives.
  • Troubleshoot and repair low-voltage analog control systems and components such as transmitters, recorders, building management systems, etc.

The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position but does include the major elements of the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience/Training:
    • 7 years’ total experience comprised of 4 years’ apprenticeship, and 3 years’ experience; OR
    • 7-9 years’ total experience comprised of formal trade school plus minimum 5-years’ experience; OR
    • 9 years’ experience (no formal training).
  • Maintenance and installation experience of commercial and industrial electrical systems and components up to 600V.
  • Proficient in the use of test equipment such as multimeters, ammeters, circuit tracers, insulation resistance testers, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical one-line drawings, interconnection drawings, relay logic diagrams, and general architectural drawings including plan and elevation layouts.
  • Understanding and proficiency in safe work practices including LOTO (Lockout / Tagout), fall protection, confined space, and in the use of various types of personal protection equipment.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
    • Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.
    • Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents.
    • Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers and supervisors
  • Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
  • Must be able to work Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm, and overtime as needed.
  • Possess a valid NYS driver's license.
  • Be able to complete all the requirements of the BNL Job Training Assessments.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge and proficiency of NFPA70 (National Electrical Code).
  • Familiarity with NFPA70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace).
  • Current or past holder of a local County Master Electricians license.
  • Possess a NYS fire/security alarm system installer license. 

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements

Must meet medical requirements of the BNL’s Job Medical Assessment Form, including but not limited to

  • Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 30 feet.
  • Work outdoors/cold and warm environments.
  • Able to use powered hand tools.
  • Able to work with machinery including benchtop grinders and similar.
  • Abel to work on scaffolds and operate man-lifts, aerial lifts, and boom trucks.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection and arc-flash suits.

Other Information:

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants.  The starting salary for this position is $44.23 per hour.
