Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for optimizing our organizational efficiency regarding legal matters. This role will examine and draft contracts, manage copyrights and trademarks, and preserve business records such as minutes of meetings and resolutions. The director will be responsible for assistance with the negotiation and management of contracts, insurance matters and employee relations. He or she will oversee compliance with corporate governance.
To ensure success you need to have sound knowledge and understanding of applicable laws and regulations, and the ability to make prudent legal decisions. Top candidate will be a team player with outstanding advocacy and people skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Legal Counsel & Compliance
- Advise executives, senior management, and the board on legal rights, obligations, and implications of new and existing laws.
- Manage the organization’s legal matters, including litigation strategy and statutory filings.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, vendor agreements, MOUs, and real estate leases.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation and legal specialties.
- Conduct legal research and ensure ethical solutions to legal challenges.
- Preserve corporate records and oversee corporate governance functions, including board policies and resolutions.
- Provide counsel on employment and HR matters, including compliance, policies, and unemployment claims.
- Create new entities and manage the organization’s intellectual property portfolio.
- Liaise with outside counsel on specialized or high-stakes legal matters.
II. Government Relations & Advocacy
- Serve as the primary liaison to local, state, and federal government entities across 24 counties in South Texas.
- Develop and implement strategic advocacy campaigns aligned with Goodwill San Antonio’s public policy agenda.
- Meet with state legislators, staff, and government officials to build support for organizational initiatives.
- Monitor and engage on legislative and regulatory issues impacting the organization.
- Provide timely updates to internal stakeholders on emerging advocacy issues.
- Prepare support materials and campaign tactics to advance policy goals.
- Participate in coalition-building efforts and partnerships to strengthen advocacy impact.
- Deliver advocacy presentations and training to staff and volunteers.
III. Leadership & Strategic Engagement
- Utilize effective management techniques to lead staff and achieve organizational objectives.
- Foster a collaborative, empowering, and professional work environment.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure consistent implementation of priorities.
- Engage key internal stakeholders to support public policy initiatives.
- Attend and actively participate in national and regional trainings, board meetings, and staff events.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, government relations, or related field.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Admission to the Texas State Bar.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience.
- Strong commitment to ethical conduct and compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Demonstrated expertise in policy analysis and legislative/regulatory documentation.
- Experience with corporate governance and secretarial duties.
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects under tight deadlines.
- Strong negotiation, research, and communication skills (oral and written).
- In-depth knowledge of statutes, rules, and regulations affecting businesses.
- High level of discretion and understanding of business confidentiality.
- Excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong adaptability.
- Willingness and ability to travel for business purposes.
