Summary/objective: A sterile technician’s primary responsibility is to ensure that all dental instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, sterilized, and ready to use. Their duties include decontaminating instruments, operating and maintaining sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, organizing and storing sterilized items, and ensuring compliance with infection control protocols. They also monitor inventory levels of sterilization supplies and assist in maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Sterilization Processes: Execute and oversee proper sterilization techniques for dental instruments, equipment, and other materials to ensure compliance with infection control standards and regulations. 
  2. Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and monitor sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners, to ensure proper functioning and troubleshoot any issues that may arise. 
  3. Inventory Management: Manage inventory of sterilized and unsterilized dental instruments and supplies, keeping track of expiration dates, and ensuring an adequate supply of sterilized items for dental procedures. 
  4. Quality Control: Implement quality control measures to validate the effectiveness of sterilization processes, including routine testing of sterilization equipment and monitoring of sterilization indicators. 
  5. Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sterilization processes, including logbooks, documentation of equipment maintenance, and tracking of inventory to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  6. Training and Education: Provide training and education to dental staff on proper sterilization protocols, instrument handling, and infection control practices to enhance awareness and compliance with the dental practice.

  3. Technical Proficiency: Exhibit proficiency in operating and maintaining sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and ultrasound cleaners, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise. 
  4. Organizational Skills: Effectively manage inventory, keep records, and coordinate with dental staff to ensure a smooth and efficient flow of sterilized instruments, minimizing downtime and delays in patient care. 
  5. Communication Skills: Communicate clearly and effectively with dental professionals and support staff, provide training on sterilization protocols, addressing concerns, and fostering collaboration to maintain a sterile environment. 
  6. Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in handling a dynamic work environment, responding to changes in sterilization protocols, equipment, and industry regulations to meet the evolving needs of the dental practice. 
  7. Reliability and Dependability: Demonstrates consistent and punctual attendance, adhering to scheduled work hours. Complete assigned tasks and responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and thoroughness. Reliably follow through on commitments and meet deadlines, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the dental practice. Show dedication to maintaining a dependable work ethic, fostering a trustworthy and reliable presence within the team.

Work Environment:

The Sterile Assistant works in the practice.

Physical demands:

  1. Standing for Extending Periods: Much of your work will involve standing while assisting dentists during procedures or preparing treatment rooms. 
  2. Manual Dexterity: You will need excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to handle dental instruments, operate equipment, and perform tasks such as taking X-rays or making impressions. 
  3. Lifting and Positioning: You may need to lift and position patients in the dental chair, as well as lift heavy equipment or supplies. 
  4. Repetitive Motion: Performing tasks such as instrument sterilization, polishing, or taking impressions may involve repetitive hand and arm movements. 
  5. Close Proximity Work: Working closely with dentists and patients requires flexibility and the ability to maneuver in confined spaces within the oral cavity. 
  6. Protective Equipment: Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and protective eyewear is essential for infection control but can also add to physical discomfort over time. 
  7. Assisting with Mobility: Some patients may require assistance getting into or out of the dental chair, which may involve physical support or guiding them safely.

No travel required.

Required education and experience: 

  • Passion for providing excellent oral care to patients.
  • Certification may be required.
  • CPR certification may be required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
