Description:
This position will provide the intern with the opportunity to gain a strong understanding of the issues surrounding food insecurity in the DMV Area. While working with our healthcare pilots team, he/she will get an in-depth look into various programs and approaches that are being deployed directly by the Food Bank and indirectly through food assistance organizations to address the issue of food insecurity both in the short and longer term. Interns are a vital part of the Capital Area Food Bank. He/she will also gain valuable training and experience that will allow them to confidently educate others about Food is Medicine (FIM) initiatives.
They will work closely with the Healthcare Pilots Specialist, Healthcare Pilots Coordinator, and Sr. Healthcare Pilots Manager to develop and implement several FIM initiatives. The intern will also support the healthcare pilots team with administrative tasks related to our food pharmacies and research study. The Healthcare Pilots Intern may occasionally travel to different food pharmacies around the DMV region doing site visits as well as food demonstrations/samplings.
This is a 20-hour per week position.
Essential Functions:
FIM Implementation Support – 80%
- Assist with the development of nutrition education materials for healthcare pilots.
- Conduct research on FIM initiatives
- Assist onboarding and internal tracking of home bound delivery patients
- Assist with patient follow-up after delivery.
- Conduct food demos/food samplings at food pharmacies.
Program Support – 15%
- Assist with scheduling partner meetings and notetaking.
- Assist with pilot site audits.
- Sort and organize healthcare pilot’s documents and folders
- Save invoices, monthly trackers, and other pilot documents
- Assist with food pharmacy orders
Miscellaneous – 5%
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Proficiency with basic computer software programs (including MS Word)
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications:
- Public health related knowledge/experience/background preferred
- Experience working with the target audience preferred
Other Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the supervisor
- Comfort with and interest in Food is Medicine, diet-related illnesses, healthcare, and research.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Ability to lift/carry 30 pounds
- This position’s main office will be the DC Office in NE, Washington DC
- Ability to travel to healthcare partner sites throughout the DMV
Reporting:
- This role reports to the Healthcare Pilots Specialist

Compensation:
- $20.00 an hour
- This position is classified as non-exempt and is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws
Schedule:
- 20 hours per week, days coordinated between intern and supervisor
