Position Summary
The Temporary English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor is responsible for providing professional and expert instruction in ESL to students whose primary language is not English. The provision of instruction, assessment, and evaluations should advance students’ ability to understand and communicate in English personal and social reasons, as well as promote their ability to utilize English to further their career pathway and journey towards economic self-sufficiency. Instruction will adhere to Congreso’s Primary Client Model (PCM) for group facilitation and be delivered through pedagogically sound lessons which include the use of technology such as recordings, computer software, and Internet learning resources wherever appropriate and possible.
This position reports to the Manager of Adult Education Services. This is an ONSITE position.
The Temporary English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor applies the principles of the organization’s signature service delivery approach, Primary Client Model (PCM™), by promoting a positive employee/client-focused experience that is appreciative of the unique strengths, values and needs that each individual brings; and by using data to inform and drive decision making. Essential Functions

- Represents Congreso’s mission, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and will be an ambassador of our work.
- Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English to learners in Congreso’s ESOL classes.
- Teaches basic, intermediate, and advanced-level ESOL classes in the mornings and afternoons from Monday-Thursday.
- Delivers lesson plans as prescribed by Congreso’s PCM for group facilitation and helps students in need of other Congreso services to connect with the appropriate programs.
- Supports additional student assistance programs such as volunteer tutor/mentor programs that may be offered to learners.
- Maintains computerized records and tracks necessary outcomes such as enrollments, attendance, and gains on standardized testing (CASAS).
- Participates in agency activities, quarterly meetings, ESL meeting, City meeting and committees in order to share information that will promote the purpose and mission of Congreso.
- Seeks student feedback to enhance the classroom instruction and programmatic services.
- Contributes to the development and updating of curricula.
- Participates in the research of educational materials and equipment for training programs.
- Submits any required lesson plans or reports on a timely basis.
- Supports ESL intake at Congreso de Latinos Unidos, where needed.
- Coordinates class schedules and creates and maintains diligent records and student files.

- Ability to effectively use standard office equipment, including a variety of common software programs such as Office365, UNIDAD, and other customized databases.
- Follows through on assignments, works in a timely manner, within established deadlines, and completes special projects specific to the function of the department, as needed or as directed by supervisor.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups, in a compassionate, courteous, and respectful manner that fosters an inclusive environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including effective and respectful communication with individuals and groups.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) written and verbal skills required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Experience, Education, and Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Associate’s degree in education or social services-related area required.
Minimum Experience:
A minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching ESOL classes to adults preferred.
