Position Summary
In collaboration with the Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students at Delbarton School oversees student behavior and formation, fostering a vibrant, disciplined, and faith-centered school culture rooted in Delbarton’s Benedictine Catholic mission. The Dean serves as the chief advocate for student character development, ensuring that all aspects of student life reflect the School’s Benedictine Catholic values: humility, obedience, hospitality, discipline, and love of God and neighbor.
The Dean of Students upholds community conduct norms, guiding restorative practices, and fostering a school culture of respect, accountability, and character formation. Through close collaboration with administrators, faculty, staff, and parents, the Dean accompanies young men on their journey of conversatio morum: a lifelong conversion of life in pursuit of truth and holiness.
Responsibilities
Serves as the primary administrator overseeing student behavior, discipline, and conduct in accordance with the School’s Benedictine Catholic values and the disciplinary principles found in the Student Handbook.
Promotes Delbarton’s Benedictine Catholic mission by supporting student character development and maintenance of a safe, orderly, and mission-aligned school environment.
In the spirit of “discipline by conversation,” the Dean oversees student discipline and restorative justice practices that emphasize student accountability, reconciliation, and growth.
Collects, analyzes, and reports behavior and attendance data to guide disciplinary interventions and policy refinement.
Supervises the Attendance Officer and ensures timely communication with parents and guardians regarding student conduct and welfare.
Liaise between the School and parents on matters of student conduct and formation.
Oversees training for faculty on classroom management and Benedictine approaches to discipline and student support.
Maintains accurate and confidential records related to student behavior, discipline, and supports interventions to ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Serves as lead site manager for important school events that have a significant student presence
Member of the Emergency Response Team.
With the Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs and the Director of Security assists in the oversight of drills, risk management, and coordination with local emergency services.
Collaborates with the Security staff in supervising student arrival to and departure from school
With the Headmaster, the Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs, and the Dean of Guidance, serves on and chairs the Discipline Committee.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Deep commitment to the Roman Catholic and Benedictine identity and mission of Delbarton School.
Proven experience in student life, formation, or educational leadership, preferably within a Catholic school setting.
Strong understanding of adolescent development, restorative discipline, and student support systems.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead with both compassion and conviction.
Collaborative leadership style with a pastoral approach to student formation.
Demonstrated success managing complex situations involving student behavior, discipline, and family engagement.
Proficiency with educational technology and student information systems.
Willingness to participate in the full life of the school community, including evenings and weekends as needed.
