About the Department

To provide a safe and high quality swimming program for all ages.  Perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Position Duties

  1. Teach swim lessons in accordance with American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor standards.
  2. Organize class and maintain appropriate control.
  3. Maintain safe environment for participants at all times.
  4. Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
  5. Inspect the facility and report any unsafe conditions or equipment problems to the supervisor.
  6. Perform cleaning duties as assigned by supervisor.
  7. Complete required records, reports and evaluations.
  8. Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
  9. Maintain current required certifications.
  10. Exercise regularly to maintain fitness level (strength and endurance).
  11. Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Other Duties:
  1.  Attend and participate in staff meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreation and facility management.
  2. Ensure adherence to safe work practices.
  3. Demonstrate professionalism.
  4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. 
  5. Assist other departments as necessary. 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Knowledge of:
Operations, services and activities of a municipal recreation facility, including aquatics facilities.
Modern and complex principles and practices of recreation and aquatics services, facility management.
Appropriate skills and techniques for swimming lesson courses.
Facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
Leadership and public relations skills.
Decision-making skills.

Ability to:
Plan and develop age and skill appropriate lessons.
Perform CPR/AED and First Aid skills, as necessary.
Operate a multi-line telephone system and direct calls appropriately.
Deal effectively and diplomatically with the public.
Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.  
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.
Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.
Use and perform normal maintenance of office machines (copier, computer, printer, fax, etc.) and aquatics equipment.
 
Work Environment:
Indoor and outdoor recreational facility. May work in or around water and slippery surfaces; exposure to noise, fumes and hazardous materials.
 
Physical Activities:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for light lifting and carrying; and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to perform all Water Safety Instructor skills, as required by the American Red Cross, in the pools or on the deck in the Aquatics area.
Handling of equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. including floor to waist and overhead lifting;
Ability to lift, push and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs;
Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, reach, carry, grasp and turn objects;
Ability to climb stairs; and stand, sit and walk for up to 60 minutes at a time;
Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to take messages, operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks;
Acceptable eyesight to read printed material & a computer monitor and to operate office equipment;
Acceptable hearing to communicate with others in person or through telephonic means;
Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

Education or Formal Training and Licenses:
Minimum Qualifications 
Current Certification in the following:
Possession of valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
Possession of valid American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
 
Experience:
Completion of required American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer courses.
