DEPARTMENT: Public Works / Stormwater, City of Rocky Mount
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for operating trucks and other vehicles and equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the city stormwater system.
Position Duties
- Transport materials to work sites, including sand, stone, soil, and gravel.
- Lays pipes.
- Patches holes in drainage pipes.
- Builds and repairs catch basins.
- Installs and repairs landscaping.
- Operates snowplows and salt spreaders.
- Operates chain saws and pole saws.
- Operates sewer jet truck.
- Assists in determining grades.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Clean storm drains.
- Flags traffic at work sites.
- Transport heavy equipment to work sites.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) years' experience in a related field of work.
- Combination of experience in a related field of work.
Possession of a valid Class “B” CDL (or higher) driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in the performance of related maintenance and construction activities.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; emergency response plans; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related truck operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate trucks and other equipment and vehicles in the collection of leaves, construction maintenance, and the repair of the city’s storm water system. Success in this position ensures the effective and efficient collection of leaves and other construction maintenance operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is light work which requires exerting up to 0 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required close visual acuity to perform activities like viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
