As our Electrical Instrumentation Planner, you will play a crucial role in coordinating all electrical tasks, including preventative maintenance planning, job staging, and performance planning in an underground hard rock mining operation to keep our production going and our profitability up. Every day you will work at a mine on a remote island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You’ll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. You will be called upon to work cooperatively with others as part of a team, and encourage collaboration, trust and openness among employees. Your primary responsibility will be to support the Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Department, while also coordinating closely with the Underground Electrical and Powerhouse departments. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 515 people. Here’s what you can expect in this role: 

  • Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well. 
  • You will write and assign all plans with safety as your top priority, ensuring that safety instructions are thoughtfully assessed and incorporated into work orders.
  • You will handle parts purchasing for work orders and in-house stock, regularly monitoring all electrical storage areas to maintain necessary inventory levels.
  • You will plan and coordinate work orders and projects, working directly with supervisors and the Electrical Department to prioritize tasks and close work orders efficiently. 
  • You will consolidate work orders for monthly reports on Powerhouse, PC Group, UE, and E&I activities, facilitating the evaluation of department performance and time usage.
  • You will plan critical testing and store resulting reports for MSHA and FM Global examinations.
  • You will plan and maintain records of all Annual Ground Check activities in compliance with MSHA regulations.
  • You will manage the medium voltage breaker maintenance schedule.
  • You will monitor the PIR index, Jumper Log, and OneSCADA corrections Log, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • You will take the lead in weekly planning meetings in conjunction with the mechanical planner, driving collaboration and efficiency.
  • Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before work starts. You will promote and personally observe safety procedures.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Electrical Instrumentation Planner is a key person for coordination of all electrical tasks, preventative maintenance planning, job staging, and performance planning with responsibility for the E&I Department and coordination with the Underground Electrical and Powerhouse departments.

Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

All Hecla personnel shall strive to achieve best practice in safety and health, and assist in the control of incidents, injuries and loss. Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Complying with all necessary requirements put in place to prevent incidents, injuries or losses
  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable 
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations 
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner 
  • Using and maintaining PPE
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes 
  • Assisting Management by supporting change to achieve desired targets 
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits 
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology
  • Participating in safety initiatives
  • Receiving training and instruction as required 
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Writing and assigning all plans with safety as the first priority.        
  • Safety instructions on work orders to be assessed and assigned to work orders with conscious thought.
  • Required to work in all areas of the Mine, Mill, and Surface operations
  • Ellipse training and knowledge of the planners function in Ellipse
  • Parts purchasing for work orders and in-house stock.  Regular monitoring of all electrical storage areas to maintain required shelf stock.
  • Work Order and Project planning coordinating directly with supervisors and Electrical Administrator.  Maintain prioritization and closing of work orders.
  • Work Order and Parts staging.
  • Job descriptions to be written with details and not generalized comments.        
  • Allow employees to work instead of spend time figuring out what is needed.
  • Create and Update equipment IDs with accompanying data entries to Ellipse.
  • Create and maintain Standard Jobs in Ellipse with supervisor, operations, and instrumentation assistance on developing required steps.
  • Coalition of work orders for a monthly report of Powerhouse, PC Group, UE, and E&I for evaluation of departments and usage of time.
  • Critical testing planning and resulting report storage for MSHA and FM Global examination.
  • Planning and maintenance of all Annual Ground Check records as per MSHA regulations.
  • Maintain medium voltage breaker maintenance schedule.

  • Presence on island at week before and after down day is required to insure smooth planning and document completion.  
  • Intimate knowledge of Down Day requirements and procedures is required. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and/or Experience 

  • 10 years in the electrical field as a Journeyman with minimum 5 years in lead and planning positions.
  • Electrical Journeyman License with experience in project lead and job planning in both the commercial and industrial areas of the trade.
  • Interdepartmental coordination and cooperation must be displayed in prior work habits.
  • Preferred:  Related vocational training from an accredited institution.
  • Ellipse training in creation/maintenance of work orders, planning functions, equipment registers, and scheduling.

 

Other Qualifications

  • Instrumentation setup, calibration and repair, electrical installation, repair and AutoCAD. State of Alaska Journeyman Certificate preferred 
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Pass a position-specific physical demands assessment.
  • Must be able to obtain ATF Employee Possessor clearance

While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must be able to talk and hear.

  • Have clarity of vision while operating machinery, reading gauges, and placing tools
  • Have clarity of vision for distances while navigating within the mine and access roads efficiently and safely
  • Able to adjust varying points of reference while safely navigating the terrain, maintaining awareness of traffic, and operating tools and machinery
  • Able to identify vehicles, machinery, and people in peripheral vision

 

Speaking - Occasional: 

  • Able to clearly communicate with co-workers and supervisors on the radio and in person

 

Hearing - Occasional: 

  • Must wear hearing protection while working in the mine

 

Work Environment & Job Schedule
Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration.   The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules may require residency in on-island camp during work rotations.
