About the Department

The City of Tehachapi is seeking qualified candidates for one (1) full-time Maintenance Worker position. The successful applicant may be hired at the Maintenance Worker I, Maintenance Worker II, or Senior Maintenance Worker level, depending on qualifications and experience.

This position is assigned to the Streets Division of the City’s Public Works Department, which is responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure and ensuring safe, accessible roadways for the community.

Position Duties

Work assignments will primarily include:

  • Asphalt Maintenance & Repair: Patching potholes, repairing damaged road surfaces, compacting asphalt, and assisting with street reconstruction.
  • Concrete Work: Installing and repairing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and ADA ramps; forming and finishing concrete for small and large projects.
  • Street Signs & Traffic Control: Installing, replacing, and maintaining traffic control signs, pavement markings, and barricades; setting up safe traffic control around work zones.
  • Street Maintenance & General Repair: Cleaning and maintaining streets, alleys, and drainage systems; responding to emergencies such as storm damage or road hazards; supporting weed abatement and graffiti removal efforts.
  • Equipment Operation: Using construction equipment such as dump trucks, rollers, backhoes, loaders, and various power tools needed for street and concrete work.

In addition to hands-on maintenance, employees are expected to practice safe work habits, follow City procedures, and deliver excellent customer service to the community.


Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment
  • Basic methods, practices and equipment used in building maintenance services and activities including a variety of building trades work
  • Safe work practices

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work


Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

None is required. Six months of paid work experience involving the performance of routine maintenance tasks is desirable.


Training:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.


License and Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California driver’s license. Most assignments require the possession of a valid Class B California Driver’s License by the end of the probationary period. Failure to obtain the license within this period and/or failure to pass the federally mandated DOT drug/alcohol test after obtaining the license may result in release from probation. 


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long period of time; frequent bending and squatting. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 60 pounds; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds, depending on assignment. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. May be required to wear ear protection or hear in noisy conditions. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to typical street or field noise and environment including exposure to loud equipment and machinery. Some work may occur at remote locations. Positions may require occasional overtime and weekend work and travel is rare.


PAY SCALES

  • Maintenance Worker I: Entry-level position; performs semi-skilled labor under direct supervision. $3,954 - $6,198 per month
  • Maintenance Worker II: Journey-level position; performs skilled maintenance and repair tasks with greater independence. $4,333- $6,798 per month
  • Senior Maintenance Worker: Advanced-level position; leads, organizes, and participates in maintenance operations, including operating specialized heavy equipment and providing functional supervision to staff. $4,689 - $7,349 per month
