DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ELL Teacher Specialist supports Hampton City Schools’ Language Programs Department by providing leadership, professional development, and instructional support for teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs). The Specialist ensures compliance with federal and state mandates, supports curriculum development, coordinates student assessment and data management, and collaborates with schools, families, and community partners to promote equitable outcomes for multilingual learners.
The ELL Teacher Specialist will:
Instructional Support & Coaching - Provide instructional coaching and professional development for ELL teachers and general education staff on best practices for supporting English learners.
- Conduct classroom walkthroughs, provide feedback, and model effective strategies.
- Support teachers in lesson planning, curriculum alignment, and integrating language development into content instruction.
Program Development & Compliance - Assist with the design, delivery, and revision of ELL curriculum and resources.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies related to English Learners, including documentation, testing accommodations, and student plans.
- Coordinate and monitor WIDA ACCESS testing, screening, exemptions, and secure materials handling.
- Maintain and update student data in PowerSchool, ELLevation, and DRC systems.
Collaboration & Leadership - Serve as a liaison between the Language Programs Department, school administrators, and instructional staff.
- Collaborate with district departments (ELA, Math, Testing, Climate & Culture, Special Education) to integrate supports for ELLs.
- Participate in district-wide initiatives, leadership teams, and professional learning communities (PLCs/CLTs).
- Contribute to the recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring of ELL staff and Family Engagement Specialists.
Family & Community Engagement - Support family engagement events and provide interpretation/translation resources when appropriate.
- Communicate with families regarding student enrollment, placement, and program services.
- Partner with community organizations to support multilingual learners and their families.
Professional Growth & Leadership Development - Attend regional, state, and national professional development meetings (e.g., VESA).
- Present at district and regional conferences on topics related to ELL education.
- Stay current with research-based practices, instructional technology, and emerging trends in ELL education.
Other related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: - Valid Virginia teaching license with an ESL endorsement required.
- Master’s degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field preferred.
- Education Specialist/ Leadership Certification preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of successful teaching experience with English Learners.
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional strategies, WIDA standards, and data-informed decision making.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively across departments and schools.
- Proficiency in instructional technology, student information systems (PowerSchool, ELLevation), and assessment platforms.
