JOB HIGHLIGHTS

POSITION PURPOSE:  The Marketing & Communications Manager drives strategic initiatives that advance the Detroit Sports Commission’s mission and strengthen its brand. This role shapes DSC’s public image, leads communications for marquee events such as the 2027 NCAA Men’s Final Four, and ensures alignment with Visit Detroit’s marketing strategy. The Manager serves as primary liaison to Visit Detroit’s MarCom team, manages agency partnerships, and directs internal and contracted personnel to deliver consistent, aligned messaging across all platforms.

LOCATION & SCHEDULE: 

  • Full-time
  • This position currently involves a hybrid working model with 2 days remote, and 3 days in-office in Detroit, MI.

WHAT WE REQUIRE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
  • 6-8 years of professional experience in marketing, communications, media relations, or event marketing.
  • Ability to travel locally, nationally, and internationally with a valid Michigan driver's license and U.S. Passport.

PREFERRED:

  • 8+ Years of experience within sports, tourism, or entertainment organizations.
  • Direct work with national governing bodies or major sports leagues and events.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex campaigns involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Established relationships in sports media and event marketing.                                               

HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Lead all marketing and communications strategies and execution for the 2027 NCAA Men’s Final Four.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between DSC, Visit Detroit’s marketing teams, and event organizers to develop and implement integrated PR, traditional media, and digital marketing strategies.
  • Manage all internal and external communications, including messaging alignment and brand consistency.
  • Oversee all media relations, storytelling, press releases, and proactive media outreach.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage media operations for marquee events, including on-site presence for the entirety of all event days to oversee press activities, media credentialing, and real-time communications.
  • Direct and oversee the work of the marketing and communications specialist and contracted personnel, ensuring consistency and alignment across all efforts.
  • Develop and implement a scalable, long-term marketing and communications infrastructure for DSC.
  • Provide marketing and PR support for additional DSC-hosted or supported events.
  • Coordinate production and distribution of promotional materials, presentations, and bid documents.
  • Collaborate with event partners, governing bodies, and stakeholders.
  • Lead content strategy development for digital platforms, social media, and detroitsports.org.
  • Develop key messages, FAQs, and communications toolkits for stakeholders and partners.
  • Work closely with DSC leadership and Visit Detroit to ensure brand alignment and integrated communications.
  • Mentor the Marketing & Communications Specialist and support professional development.
  • Support the development of internal reports, recaps, and ROI summaries tied to events and campaigns.
  • Embed diversity, equity, and inclusion into all communications and marketing efforts.

OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS:

  • Complete tasks and assignments as directed by the Executive Director. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Team oriented individual with an interest and passion for sports.
  • Working knowledge of the hospitality and sports event industry, knowledge of area hotels/motels, and of regional sports facilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including the ability to clearly express complex thoughts, ideas, and concepts in the English language.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple clerical tasks as well as play a supporting role throughout the sales process when needed.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to clearly express thoughts, ideas, and concepts, verbally and in writing, in the English language.
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and analyzing multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to think and manage creatively in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains a positive and professional work attitude, appearance, and behavior even in the most demanding situation.
  • Ability to work effectively in both remote and in-person work environment; proficient using video conferencing software and other remote work tools.
  • Proficient in using personal computer software and applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
  • Available weekends and outside of normal work hours for assignments and travel, as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Office work involves extended periods of sitting or working at a desk, utilizing repetitive typing motions on a computer or laptop, and reading text on a video display monitor.
  • Ability to perform extensive standing and/or walking for work-related assignments and events.
  • Ability to lift push, and or carry up to 50lbs. occasionally
