Under general supervision, to perform a variety of difficult technical accounting and statistical recordkeeping assignments in the preparation, processing, and maintenance of City payroll data, reports, records, investment assistance, accounts payable, purchasing, budget reports, ledger maintenance, or other specialized area; and to perform related work as required.
This is the advanced working level in the Finance Technician class series. Positions are regularly assigned to work on a specialized area of the City's finance and account recordkeeping system, such as payroll, investment assistance, purchasing, accounts payable, or ledger maintenance. They may also provide backup assistance in an area outside of their normal work area.
Position Duties
Performs a variety of specialized and technical account and statistical recordkeeping work in an area such as payroll, investment assistance, accounts payable, purchasing, ledger maintenance, or related areas of the City's financial recordkeeping system including computer systems; posts information to records, ledgers, and accounts, resolving discrepancies as they arise; updates computer-based files and information systems; codes information for proper account identification; prepares a variety of specialized reports related to the area of assignment; prepares reports required by other government agencies; prepares warrants and checks as necessary; distributes and disburses checks and warrants after proper verification and approval; may solicit and select approved investments according to established guidelines; may prepare financial information for budget development purposes; performs a variety of specially assigned information gathering projects; reconciles bank accounts; maintains subsidiary ledgers; answers a variety of general and special inquiries related to the area of job assignment; operates computer and office equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. is desirable, supplemented by courses in accounting, bookkeeping, and related areas is desirable.
Work Background: Three years of progressively responsible work experience in the maintenance and preparation of financial and statistical records, preferably including at least one year in an area such as payroll development and processing, purchasing, investment assistance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cashiering, ledger maintenance, or other specialized area of financial and statistical recordkeeping.

- Policies, requirements, and procedures of an assigned specialized area of the City's financial and account recordkeeping systems.
- Laws and regulations affecting the area of assignment.
- Basic knowledge of the use of data processing systems, such as MS Office, Word and Excel.
- Modern office methods, practices, and procedures.
- Perform a wide variety of specialized financial and statistical recordkeeping assignments.
- Prepare and maintain complex records, information, and reports.
- Use data processing terminals and equipment for imputing payroll data and generating reports.
- Make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately.
- Use calculators and office equipment.
- Type at a prescribed speed of 40 words per minute.
- Prepare accurate financial and accounting records.
- Provide information to others concerning financial and accounting records.
- Effectively represent the accounting functions with concerned individuals, community organizations, and other governmental agencies.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
