Summary:

The Financial Controller is responsible for leading and overseeing all day-to-day accounting and financial operations to ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across the organization. This role manages the full spectrum of accounting functions, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, cash receipts, banking, credit and collections, fixed assets, cost of goods sold (COGS) accounting, and the General Ledger.


Beyond transactional oversight, the Controller plays a key role in ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting strategic decision-making. The position works closely with leadership to provide insights into financial performance, implement process improvements, and ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.


At Chef Works, the Controller also partners cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, and sales teams to analyze costs, streamline processes, and contribute to initiatives that drive profitability and operational efficiency. The Controller supervises and develops accounting team members, fostering accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement across all finance functions.


Essential Functions:

•Oversee financial operations of multiple accounting entities, both foreign and domestic.

•Recruits, trains, supervises, coaches and manages the Accounting department team. Makes recommendations on hiring, termination, development, and appropriate disciplinary action.

•Drafts monthly and annual consolidated financial statements (BS, IS, CF).

•Manages daily cash and banking requirements and projects cash requirements in accordance with strategic initiatives.

•Reviews and controls the expense reporting and control process. Monitors systems to ensure effective reconciliation of bank accounts and sub systems and programs.

•Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget including the revenue, expense and capital expenditures. Coordinates with managers to identify and resolve operating variances on a monthly basis.

•inventory control and other related initiatives.

•Coordinates all internal and external audit activities. Coordinates annual review of financial statements and tax return completion with CPA firm.

•Assists in the management of the company’s property and liability insurance programs.

Communicates with all levels of management regarding fiscal policies and provides direction in the implementation of these policies.

•Recommends new or revised accounting systems to improve departmental efficiency.

•Develops and implements departmental goals and organizational structure.

•Develops strong working relationships with banking, insurance, and other outside consultants.

•Assists VP, Finance and Chief Financial Officer with various projects, modeling and other strategic initiatives.

•Monitors and stays abreast of industry standards and operational and changes which impact Chef Works financial success. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

Requirements

Position Requirements:

•BS in Accounting or equivalent work experience. Strong working knowledge of GAAP. Very good working knowledge of California and federal labor law, and federal insurance regulations. Experience with a consumer product company preferred. CPA preferred.

•Seven or more years progressive Accounting and Finance experience. Five or more years supervisory experience in an Accounting leadership role. Demonstrated success in coaching and mentoring staff.

•Ability to take ownership of tasks and see them through to completion.

•Proficiency in the use of software applications (ACCPAC / Sage 300), MRP / ERP databases, Excel spreadsheets (expert level), Outlook, Power Point and Word (intermediate level) required.

•Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.


Physical Requirements: 

Occasional lifting of 10lbs or less (less than 5% of the time) generally at waist level, some above/below waist, none above shoulders. Must be able to do desk work, which includes computer work for extended periods of time. Some use of telephone.
