Position Summary: The Oil and Gas Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of commercial risks in the oil and gas sector. This role supports the development and execution of a specialty energy underwriting program, ensuring profitable growth, effective risk selection, and strong broker and carrier relationships. The position requires technical underwriting expertise, familiarity with energy-sector exposures, and the ability to work cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Tasks:

  • Assist in defining underwriting appetite, pricing strategies, rating tools, and guidelines.
  • Draft policy forms, endorsements, and submission requirements in partnership with legal and compliance.
  • Working closely with brokers, risk engineers, and actuaries to develop customized coverage terms and premiums.
  • Prepare carrier-facing program documentation and submissions
  • Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal submissions for oil and gas-related commercial risks.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, terms, and conditions using sound underwriting judgment.
  • Maintain profitability while supporting growth objectives and adherence to underwriting authority.
  • Build and manage relationships with retail and wholesale brokers to generate quality submissions
  • Communicate program appetite and features to external partners
  • Coordinate with carrier and reinsurance partners on strategic alignment, performance goals, and reporting
  • Partner with actuarial, claims, and reinsurance teams to monitor program performance and inform strategy.
  • Share market feedback and underwriting insights to guide product development and competitiveness
  • Develop and refine operational workflows to support policy issuance, endorsements, audits, and renewals
  • Work with internal teams to align systems and processes with program requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, internal guidelines, and audit protocols.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial underwriting experience, with a focus on energy/oil & gas sectors.
  • Experience in delegated authority programs and specialty underwriting preferred.
  • Expertise in surplus lines regulations, P&C filings, licensing, and state insurance department operations
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills; ability to evaluate complex risks.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and underwriting platforms/systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; capable of technical information to non-technical audiences.

Licensing and Credentials:

  • State Licensing
  • CPCU, ARM, or equivalent professional insurance designation.

Systems:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of SaaS system

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Repeated use of sight to read documents and computer screens
  • Repeated use of hearing and speech to communicate on telephone and in person
  • Repetitive hand movements, such as keyboarding, writing, 10-key
  • Walking, bending, sitting, reaching and stretching in all directions
