About the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with 3 million members in more than 8,600 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands.,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA’s roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther.


The Lutheran Center (national office) is located in Chicago, Illinois. A staff of approximately 400, under the leadership of the Presiding Bishop, serve as administrators, advisors, conveners, partners, and resource people for the ELCA and its ministries. Staff lead the work of national, domestic, and global ministries and programs including Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger, Service & Justice, Christian Community and Leadership, and Innovation.  We are also home to five of our separately incorporated ministries: The Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, Women of the ELCA, Lutheran Men in Mission, the ELCA Foundation and the ELCA Federal Credit Union.


About the position

This position is part of the Human Resources team in the Office of the Presiding Bishop. Every function of the Office of the Presiding Bishop serves to support and guide members of this church as we wonder, discover, and boldly participate in what God is up to in the world. 


The Talent Acquisition Specialist is responsible for managing and improving full-cycle recruitment processes for the ELCA. This role partners with leaders across the organization to attract, assess, and hire diverse and mission-driven talent. The Specialist will also play a key role in employer branding, process improvement, and ensuring a positive candidate experience that reflects the ELCA’s values.


This is a full-time, regular, hybrid (Chicago-based), exempt position. This position has responsibilities that will require being in the Lutheran Center office on a regular monthly basis and as needed. 


Candidates for this position must reside within the fifty United States or the District of Columbia and be authorized to work lawfully in the United States. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.


  1. Manage full-cycle recruitment for assigned positions, including job postings, resume screening, candidate interviews, selection, and offers.
  2. Partner with hiring managers to understand workforce needs, create recruitment strategies, and support equitable hiring practices.
  3. Develop and maintain relationships with candidates to provide an excellent candidate experience.
  4. Ensure all recruiting practices align with the ELCA’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  5. Utilize applicant tracking system (ATS) and HRIS tools to track, manage, and report candidate activity and recruitment metrics.
  6. Build and maintain talent pipelines through proactive sourcing, networking, and outreach efforts.
  7. Contribute to employer branding efforts, including creating recruitment communications and participating in outreach events.
  8. Collaborate with HR colleagues to support onboarding and orientation of new employees.
  9. Stay current on recruitment trends, best practices, and compliance requirements.
  10. Other duties as assigned 


Requirements

  

  1. 2+ years of recruitment or talent acquisition experience. Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience preferred. 
  2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build relationships across all levels.
  3. Ability to create and implement sourcing strategies for recruitment for a variety of roles.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  5. Proven discretion and ability to handle confidential information.
  6. Previous experience recruiting in a nonprofit, faith-based, or mission-driven organization helpful.
  7. Knowledge of employment law and best practices in equitable hiring.
  8. Proficiency with applicant tracking systems and Microsoft Office Suite
  9. Appreciation for the mission, vision, and values of the ELCA. 
  10. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.


Physical 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Employee will occasionally need to lift boxes or materials up to 15 pounds. Travel 

Position requires minimal travel for recruitment events and professional development events.
