The Opportunity:
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role will utilize ADP Comprehensive Services to manage payroll operations, reporting, and related compliance activities. The Payroll Specialist will also support HR with assigned administrative tasks and operate under the guidance of senior HR/Payroll leadership to ensure continuous growth and development in the role. The position requires a good understanding of payroll regulations, payroll systems, some HRIS and cross-functional collaboration to align payroll practices with business objectives.
What You’ll Do:
Payroll Partnership & Execution
- Serve as the primary payroll liaison for business leaders, managers, and HR partners to resolve payroll-related questions, concerns, and escalations.
- Oversee and coordinate end-to-end payroll processes for multi-site, multi-state operations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws while following MeriCal’s SOPs
- Partner with third party managed payroll provider ADP Comprehensive Payroll Services, to ensure accurate payroll processing incorporating MeriCal’s payroll practices and effective use of platform features.
- Partner with HR and managers to ensure accurate and timely submission of employee changes, new hire information, terminations, and pay adjustments.
- Conduct pre- and post-payroll audits to validate data accuracy, compliance, and proper application of pay rules.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure payroll operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Collaborate with HR, Legal, and Compliance teams to address payroll-related legal inquiries, wage claims, and government audits.
- Maintain thorough documentation of payroll processes, audit results, and compliance activities.
Process Improvement & Reporting
- Partner with Finance, HR, and IT to optimize payroll systems, automation, and workflows.
- Identify process gaps, propose solutions, and lead implementation of payroll enhancements.
- Generate and analyze payroll reports to support business planning, budgeting, and compliance.
Employee & Manager Support
- Provide guidance to employees and leaders on payroll processes, deductions, taxes, garnishments, and timekeeping policies.
- Collaborate with HRBPs on employee relations cases involving payroll issues.
- Assist in training managers and supervisors on payroll and timekeeping best practices.
Additional HR Support
- Assist with HR initiatives and projects assigned, including benefits administration, employee engagement activities, and compliance training.
- Support other HR team members during peak workload periods or special projects.
What You’ll Bring:
Required:
- Minimum 5 years of payroll experience in a multi-site, multi-state environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field required.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll laws and wage and hour compliance.
- Proficiency with ADP Comprehensive Services and other HRIS/payroll platforms; strong Excel/reporting skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle sensitive payroll matters with discretion.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
Preferred:
- Experience in manufacturing or similar fast-paced environment.
- Payroll certifications such as CPP or FPC.
- Experience working in a business partner or consultative payroll role.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field required.
- A bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with 3–5 years of relevant payroll experience will also be accepted.
- Professional payroll certifications (CPP, FPC) preferred.
- Knowledge of all ADP software’s as it pertains to any and all benefits.

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $70,000-$75,000. The compensation offered may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and/or education.
