About the Department


Join us in leading the care of Durango’s parks and green spaces. As Parks Manager, you’ll guide the team responsible for parks, athletic fields, trails, cemetery grounds, and the urban forest. You’ll oversee daily operations and long-term planning, from managing resources and facilities to staff development. Through your leadership, our community spaces will remain safe, vibrant, and well-maintained.

About the Division: 
The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance and stewardship of the City’s public spaces and grounds. As the Parks Manager, you will oversee the following subdivisions: 
  • Forestry: Maintains over 11,300 trees and plants adaptable trees to grow a diverse, healthy, and sustainable urban forest. 
  • Parks: Cares for over 35 parks of varying sizes and amenities, offering a variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. 
  • Cemetery: Maintains Durango's 40-acre Greenmount Cemetery, a historic site that dates back to the early 1900s.

Position Duties

What You’ll Do in This Role:  

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate the park operations work plan, including assigning and prioritizing projects. 
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Parks Division staff, including managing staffing levels, identifying areas for improvement, coordinating safety trainings, and ensuring adherence to safety standards. 
  • Assist with the management, development, and implementation of the City’s strategic plan and division goals. Represent the department on interdepartmental teams that drive improvements across the organization. 
  • Oversee the development and administration of the operational budget, submitting recommendations and authorizing expenditures. 
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities, using data to make informed decisions. 
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure success within the Parks Division. 
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of accurate Geographic Information System (GIS) data for parks, cemetery, and forestry. 
  • Develop and implement a Parks Inventory and Future Needs Assessment Plan for the ongoing upkeep of facilities like restrooms, irrigation systems, playgrounds, trails, and park amenities. 
  • Oversee new park construction projects to guarantee they meet City standards for future maintenance. 
  • Lead the effort to select, implement, and maintain an effective work order program to track resources. 
  • Manage and monitor the work of contracted services for parks, cemetery, trails, and forestry. 
  • Coordinate and direct all snow removal for the Parks Division. 

Minimum Qualifications

You Have:  

  • A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in parks and recreation management, landscape architecture, turf management, public administration, or a related field. 
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in facilities, parks, or landscape maintenance. This should include one year of supervisory or lead experience. A combination of education and experience will also be considered. 
  • A valid driver’s license. 
  • The ability to obtain a CPR/AED and First Aid Certificate. 
  • The ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). 
You Will Succeed in This Role If You: 
  • Bring knowledge of park operations and maintenance, including parks, trails, cemetery grounds, and forestry. 
  • Understand general design principles, construction practices, and applicable codes for park and trail development. 
  • Have experience leading a team through supervision, training, and performance evaluation. 
  • Can manage budgets, resources, and planning for public facilities and services. 
  • Understand safety practices, equipment, and regulations related to park and facility maintenance. 
  • Communicate clearly in writing and in person, and build strong working relationships across departments and with the community.
