About the Department

The Network Administrator – Infrastructure position reports to the Supervisor of Networking and Telecommunications. This position is responsible for development of network designs that meet or exceed the technical requirements put forth by various campus IT initiatives.  This position at times also collaborates with IT contractors to design and approve network designs for new large scale deployments. As a member of the networking team, he or she also assists in managing, monitoring, making performance improvement recommendations and troubleshooting mission critical data and telephone systems across campus.

Position Duties

  • Architect new highly available network designs and approaches, develop proof of concept environments, implement university data networks (wired and wireless) including but not limited to switches, routers, firewalls, wireless LAN controllers, access point placements, and 802.1x authentication design.
  • Develop scope of work, cost estimates, quotes, and scheduling information for rollout of new networks and network systems during upgrades or new expansion initiatives; Review and approve the work of networking contractors and vendors as it relates to specific point projects as ongoing refresh activities occur. 
  • Analyze and evaluate current network components and bandwidth in order to design and for upgrades to provide better service to faculty, staff, and students. Meet with vendors and service providers to plan for upgrades to network components and connectivity
  • Provide tier 3 support to the ITS service desk, server teams, applications teams, and junior network team members as needed to resolve complex issues including performance, access, and service impacting situations.
  • Monitor network equipment and connections for all BGSU locations, including main campus, Firelands campus, and Levis Commons. Monitor environmental conditions (power, air conditioning, security) in all ITS networking data rooms to ensure continuous network uptime.  Work closely with BGSU Campus Operations and outside contractors to quickly resolve all problems.
  • Review network and voice network documentation for accuracy, practical usage, and coverage of all support and operations of the voice and data network.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:

  • Bachelor's degree required.  Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following Degree is preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in computer science, management information systems or related field.
The following Experience is required: 
  • 5 years with technology responsibilities in a complex, enterprise environment
  • 5 years network switch, router, and firewall experience
  • 2 years firewall management experience
  • 1 year network design planning


Other Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience working in an enterprise level (5K+ users) configuration including supporting and maintaining related technologies
  • Expert level knowledge with design of complex enterprise or campus networks
  • Expert level knowledge with wireless network equipment and solutions
  • Advanced knowledge of 802.11 a/b/g/n and 2.4 and 5GHz wireless spectrum
  • Expert level skills with troubleshooting skills in enterprise systems
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills must be systematic, technically curious, and self-motivated
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills including the ability to write and deliver clear and concise instructions, reports and work summaries. Have good interpersonal skills, strong customer service and customer relation skills
  • Experience evaluating new and emerging technologies and their potential application at an enterprise level
  • Experience with network monitoring tools, enterprise monitoring of network infrastructure, network performance, and capacity analysis
  • Knowledge and or experience with IPv6 addressing experience
  • Knowledge and or experience with PBX or Voice over IP deployment and maintenance
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher educational setting
  • Experience leading a technical team and/or supervision of technical staff
  • Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience supporting and troubleshooting a wide variety of wireless devices

Position Schedule: Full-time position with an option for a flexible/hybrid work schedule (remote/on campus).  Work location: Bowling Green, Ohio.
