About the Department

Renton Technical College is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to serve as our Interim Dean of Health & Human Services. The interim dean will be responsible for the leadership and direction of the certificated and degree programs within the Health & Human Services division of the college. Working with college and industry partners, this position determines program development needs, leads the design of curricula that enhances employees skills, student access and success, and complies with professional accreditation requirements. As a member of the college’s instructional team, the position also has responsibility for operational management, leadership, direction towards the retention and recruitment of students, including collaboration and contribution towards the college operational and strategic plans.

The Interim Dean of Health & Human services is a full-time and exempt position reporting to the Vice President of Instruction. This position is scheduled to serve as interim dean on a quarterly basis up through the end of Spring 2026. The salary range for this position is $11,189.04 - $11,605.72 monthly. The priority consideration date for applications is July 25th, 2025. This position will remain open until filled.

Position Duties

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations) and create an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for the college’s Health and Human Services Programs that ensures consistency with current, changing and future needs of students and the community. 
  • Manage, evaluate and modify the operation of the courses, classes and special programs/projects to maintain or improve instructional quality and to assure adherence to standards.
  • Assist with planning, program and goal development for instructional and campus programs/services that supports the college’s mission and operational/strategic goals and in accordance with adopted budgets. 
  • Coordinate with administration and instructional leaders to assist with student persistence and degree/certificate completion and assist in creating innovative and strategic initiatives to support these goals.
  • Assist instructors with recruiting and placing students by contacting and maintaining relationships with businesses, industry, schools, and agencies.
  • Recommend to the president faculty, staff, and consultants for employment.
  • Establish and maintain effective and involved advisory committees for each preparatory program. 
  • Actively participate with industry, statewide committees, and activities to ensure instructional programs are current with industry standards, practices and trends.
  • Support the Continuing Education department in administering and operating a supplemental program on evenings and weekends that offer current technical upgrading.
  • Perform other duties, such as accreditation documentation and activities, as appropriate.
  • Participate in relevant on- and off-campus committee work, state and community boards and activities as appropriate and assigned by the Vice President of Instruction.

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the supervision, training and performance management of assigned faculty and staff in adherence to negotiated agreements, applicable state and federal laws, as well as College policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all faculty are appropriately certified and have developed professional improvement plans.
  • Ensure areas of responsibility operate effectively within the policies and procedures of the college and appropriate governmental agencies.  Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures for areas of responsibility.
  • Responsible for the timely development and monitoring of budgets for assigned programs, including specifications development and travel approval, while assisting with the annual, comprehensive instructional budget. Ensure appropriate cost and quality control measures are adhered to when orders for instructional and non-instructional products are purchased.
  • Assists in the management of labs (computer and science), facilities and equipment including: controlling inventory, notifying maintenance and custodial personnel when necessary and in locating appropriate space for activities.
  • In collaboration with campus safety, ensure that appropriate safety and security measures are designed, implemented and maintained in all Health and Human Services Programs and areas.
  • Provide required procedures, specifications, and reports in accordance with established schedules and formats. Direct the development and maintenance of all Health and Human Services related student handbooks specific to each program faculty, staff and administration
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate feedback data to assist in student development and persistence. Assist in resolving student issues, including discipline. 
  • Support and participate in grant applications relevant to program area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment. 
  • A Master’s degree and prior administrative / leadership experience in a post-secondary institution. This includes experience as an administrator or as a program / division lead faculty member. 
  • At least one (1) year of full-time teaching is required, three (3) years of teaching preferred.
  • A thorough understanding , knowledge, and experience with Health and Human Services Program curricula, program accreditation standards at local, state, and federal levels, educational planning and budget management, and effective teaching and learning methods is required.
  • Ability to accurately evaluate instructional activities (e.g. programs, courses, and projects) and previous experience supervising teachers and other assigned personnel.  Experience coaching and mentoring staff is preferred as well as experience managing complex and diverse instructional disciplines.
  • Knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to acquire, knowledge of contemporary curricular context for allied health education. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community partners. Entrepreneurial experience working collaboratively with local and regional institutions in developing and maintaining innovative programs in response to changing community needs.
  • Skilled with interpersonal communications, conflict resolution and organizational management. 
  • An understanding of and commitment to the education role and philosophy of the technical college.
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working hours are generally aligned to business hours, Monday – Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Work is mostly sedentary in nature, performed in an office environment. Frequent use of a computer and exposure to terminal screens is required. Work and meetings may take place across campus. May drive/travel to trainings, conferences, and/or college events. This is mostly an in-person/on-campus position; remote work may occur as business permits.
