Internal Applicants Only - Operational Officer
As an Operational Officer in the Security, Crime & Intelligence Innovation Institute (SCIII) you will work closely with the SCIII Manager to provide administrative support, guidance, and advice relevant to the SCIII and its secure research facility. This post will be required to provide effective and professional support to the SCIII, working in a seamless, integrated manner, and in partnership with teams in Central Professional Services (e.g., The Research Service, COMMS, Estates) and host School(s)/College(s), as well as wider academic and professionals across university and externally. This post will provide high level administrative support for a variety of SCIII administrative activities including internal comms, finances, recruitment, resources, meetings/events, and research support, as well as administrative tasks associated with operational aspects of the scure facility, and management of equipment and infrastructure. This post will also act as a vital first point of contact for the SCIII.
You should be confident and experienced in working effectively with a wide range of individuals and will ensure the efficient day to day running of the SCIII. The successful candidate will have experience of managing their own workload, be able to evidence an ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity, maintain the highest standards when faced with competing demands and deadlines and provide a co-ordinated, professional, and operational support to a wide programme of research. This post requires a proactive and ambitious individual with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to forge and maintain mutually beneficial relationships.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and fixed term until 31 July 2026. Applications for part-time / flexible working and internal secondments are welcomed.
Salary: £33,482 - £36,130 per annum (Grade 5)

Job Description
- Provide professional advice and guidance on operational and administrative processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
- Provide high level administrative support for a variety of administrative activities related to finance, human resources, senior management meetings, events, research, internal communications and general office management, proactively changing the delivery accordingly as required
- Support the operation of financial processes within the UII; planning, organising, monitoring progress, and intervening when required
- Investigate specific issues within the operations of the SCIII and its secure facility, creating recommendation reports, as appropriate
- Provide high level administrative support for research grants from pre to post award stage
- To provide a first-stage escalation for specified functions within the SCIII, including health & safety, IT, governance and operations
- Collaborate with others to make recommendations for development of established processes and procedures
- Undertake the training and induction of others, as appropriate
- Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
- Act as the Institute’s Health and Safety officer, maintaining a detailed knowledge of safety legislation associated with requirements of the Institute in addition to the University’s administrative regulations and procedures.

Qualifications and Education
- Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience
- Specialist knowledge of appropriate administrative systems and processes, in particular finance, human resources and research grant administration (both pre-award and post-award).
- An understanding of project management tools, including experience in managing and delivering projects to agreed timescales and budgets
- Proven ability to work as part of a dynamic and committed team
- Proven ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
- Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
- Excellent interpersonal and written skills, including the ability to deal professionally with a range of organisations and individuals at all levels, including senior staff.
